Organizational Context:
The post is located in the PCT Translation Service in the PCT Operations Division of the Innovation and Technology Sector. The PCT Translation Service is responsible for delivering comprehensive and high-quality translation in relation to patent applications filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). In particular, the PCT Translation Service is responsible for the translation of patent application abstracts and technical reports relating to the patentability of inventions.
(b) Purpose Statement
As part of the Asian Languages Section, the incumbent is required to produce final, publication-ready translations of complex, technical texts from Korean into English, in a timely and efficient manner and subject said texts to revision and other quality control mechanisms. The incumbent will also participate in the training and development of translators and suppliers.
(c) Reporting Lines
The incumbent works under the supervision of the Head of the Asian Languages Section, PCT Translation Service.
Main duties:
The incumbent will perform the following principal duties:
(a) Translate technical texts from Korean into English, meeting strict deadlines; self-revise said technical texts.
(b) Revise and perform other quality control measures on translations, including checking translations in a wide range of technical subjects for accuracy of meaning and terminology and providing detailed feedback to improve overall quality.
(c) Provide authoritative and comprehensive answers to queries from translation suppliers on a variety of translation issues and on the specifics of PCT Translation; develop and update translation guidelines, reusable training materials, and reference materials; and contribute to the definition and implementation of translation quality assurance measures for the PCT Translation Service.
(d) Train, mentor and provide feedback to translators and translation trainees (fellows) in the translation of technical documents from Korean to English and on the specifics of PCT translation.
(e) Participate in the compilation and validation of the terminology database; contribute to the development and use of electronic reference resources, including Internet and web-based databases, glossaries and terminological resources; identify potential subject fields requiring terminological research and support.
(f) Participate in the development and the use of computer-assisted translation and terminology tools, providing regular feedback on and recommendations for their application within the Service.
(g) Perform other related duties according to the needs of the Section.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Essential:
  • Advanced university degree in translation, modern languages, linguistics, or a scientific or technical field.
  • A first-level university degree plus two years of relevant experience in addition to the experience mentioned below may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Additional information concerning required education:
  • Certification from an approved authority recognizing a professional technical or legal diploma equivalent to an advanced/first-level university degree will be considered.
Experience:
Essential:
  • At least nine years of relevant professional experience and a demonstrated ability to perform the translation, revision and quality assessment of technical texts from Korean into English.
  • Additional Information concerning required experience:
  • A candidate with less than nine years but more than six years of relevant experience and holding an advanced university degree will be considered and, subject to being assessed as the best candidate, will be appointed at the P3 grade.
  • A candidate with less than 11 years but more than eight years of relevant experience and holding a first-level university degree will be considered and, subject to being assessed as the best candidate, will be appointed at the P3 grade.
Desirable:
  • Work experience in an industrial or scientific field.
  • Work experience in Intellectual Property.
Skills:
Knowledge:
Essential:
  • Broad knowledge of scientific concepts and terminology and an ability to assimilate knowledge on a wide variety of specialized technical and scientific fields.
Desirable:
  • Knowledge of SDL Studio, WorldServer or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of the subject matter dealt with by WIPO.
Skills and Competencies:
Essential:
  • Translation, revision and editing skills of an advanced level, with an ability to produce accurate and clear translations in line with established translation guidelines.
  • Ability to work rapidly and accurately within the strict limits of the deadlines set.
  • Analytical ability, good judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and an ability to maintain effective partnerships and working relations in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
  • Ability to work with computer systems, translation technology and software tools that aid the translation process.
Languages:
Essential:
  • Mother tongue level of English and excellent knowledge of Korean (First translation language) and a demonstrated ability to translate highly technical texts from Korean into English at an advanced level.
Desirable:
  • Knowledge of other PCT publication languages. The PCT publication languages are: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.
Annual salary:

67,483 USD
72,467 USD (with primary dependants)
Post adjustment:
104.0 % of the above figure(s). This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
Additional Information:
Salaries and allowances are paid in Swiss francs at the official rate of exchange of the United Nations.
