Exhibitions Specialist

The Museum seeks an Exhibitions Specialist to serve as a project manager for the preparation, installation, maintenance, and deinstallation of exhibitions. This position will report to the Registrar for Exhibitions and Loans, and work with staff in the exhibitions, curatorial, and collections departments.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Working with exhibition designers and Museum staff, plan, and manage the preparation, installation, maintenance, and deinstallation of exhibition objects.
  • Act as the project manager, with the Registrar for Exhibitions and Loans and the Exhibitions Coordinator, for the exhibition installation team.
  • Participate in long range exhibition planning.
  • Coordinate production schedules between curatorial and collections departments.
  • Determine and fulfill temporary freelance staffing needs, including hiring, coordinating, and supervising, and work with the Registrar and per diem staff to install exhibition objects according to plans made by the exhibition designer(s).
  • With the Registrar, make decisions about safe display of artifacts and address preservation issues and needs.
  • Fabricate exhibition furniture and object mounts, hiring temporary freelance staff to assist as needed and as the budget allows.
  • Mat and frame works of art, hiring temporary freelance staff to assist as needed and as the budget allows.
  • Install and maintain audiovisual / interactive components in galleries.
  • Install exhibition graphics, including vinyl, wall text, and object labels.
  • Manage exhibition maintenance, such as cleaning cases and changing light bulbs.
  • Determine and fulfill per diem staffing needs, including hiring, coordinating and supervising, and work with the Registrar and per diem staff to deinstall exhibitions.
  • Organize and keep an inventory of supplies for packing, moving, installing, and deinstalling, and make recommendations for supplies as needed.
  • Maintain inventory and good condition of framing stock, exhibition furniture, and related materials.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree required, BFA preferred
  • At least two years of experience making mounts for, packing, framing, and building crates for art works and / or museum objects, either at a museum or in an art gallery
  • Project management and supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated ability to take concept to finished product
  • Familiarity with a CAD program and ability to read technical drawings
  • Knowledge of proper object-handling and preservation techniques for a wide variety of material and object types
  • Carpentry skills
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment installing and deinstalling exhibitions.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to identify priorities and organize complex tasks

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact and communicate with a wide range of individuals with clarity, tact, and courtesy, both verbally and in writing
