The position of European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) was created in 2001 as an independent supervisory authority, which supports the establishment of the principles under which European Union institutions, bodies, agencies and offices process personal data. The authority’s objective is to ensure compliance with the fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals, and in particular the right to privacy. It is headed by the European Data Protection Supervisor, who is assisted by the Assistant Supervisor.
The Supervisor is responsible for ensuring that the fundamental rights and freedoms of natural persons, and in particular their right to privacy, are respected by European Union institutions, bodies, agencies and offices with respect to the processing of personal data.
The Assistant Supervisor assists the Supervisor and replaces him/her when the latter is absent or prevented from attending to these duties with regard to the Supervisor’s general tasks.
The Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor act in complete independence in the performance of their duties.

- Strong leadership skills to lead and steer the EDPS dynamically and successfully in an environment of rapid technical evolution with high political, economic and social sensitivity;
- Clear understanding of the effects of further advances in technology on data protection.
