ABOUT THE POSITION: Major Gifts Officer
Reporting to the Director of Development, the Major Gifts Officer is responsible for developing strategies to engage donors with the mission and work of Sarasota Opera and for the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of planned gifts and gifts of $10,000+ from a portfolio of high net worth donors and prospects. The Major Gifts Officer will also manage all activity related to Sarasota Opera's four-year comprehensive endowment and capital campaign.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Fundraising
  • Manage a portfolio that includes 80 high net worth donors and prospects.
  • Develop individual donor strategies to renew and upgrade large gifts.
  • Solicit and secure gifts at the major gift level, including multi-year and planned gifts.
  • In management of the comprehensive campaign, direct and facilitate donor research, produce campaign-related reports, brochures, marketing materials, and proposals, prepare senior leadership for donor meetings, and track meeting follow-up.
  • Work in partnership with the Director of Development, the Executive Director, and key development staff to enhance departmental operations and strategies.
  • Collaborate with Sarasota Opera's Board of Trustees and Development Committee members to develop fundraising strategies.
  • Shape and edit donor correspondence such as letters, emails, funding proposals, and reports.
  • Maintain accurate records of donor outreach and solicitation plans through regular upkeep of donor database in conjunction with all development staff.
  • Meet or exceed the expected level of donor activity each week and month, i.e., number of face-to-face visits, asks, calls, personal correspondence, etc.
  • Become familiar with Sarasota Opera's programmatic needs for the purpose of effective donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, using available resources and opportunities.
  • Partner with the Special Events Coordinator on local donor events and attend special events, as needed.
  • Special projects and other responsibilities, as needed.
Hours of Work
  • Full-time, required to attend/supervise events, and be present after hours during opera seasons (October-mid November and January-March). Vacation is not granted during these periods.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum of five years development experience
  • Major gift fundraising and planned giving experience, with a proven success record in cultivation and solicitation
  • Experience in campaign fundraising a plus
  • Executive leadership and management a plus
  • Arts experience a plus
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work well both independently and with others
  • Strong work ethic, confidence, self-motivation, enthusiasm, and maturity
  • Ability to work effectively with trustees, donors and prospects, volunteers, and staff
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Knowledge of Tessiture or other fundraising databases a plus
