We are seeking to appoint, as part of a multidisciplinary team directed by Professor Robin Dunbar, a postdoctoral research associate with experience in experimental social or cognitive psychology or human behavioural ecology to work on the cognitive bases and evolutionary functions of mentalising and the way humans use this to create and work with different kinds of virtual reality. This project forms part of an ERC-funded research programme exploring the mechanisms of community cohesion on the large scale (www.psy.ox.ac.uk/research/social-and-evolutionary-neuroscience-research-group-senrg).
You will be responsible for developing and running studies experimental examining the cognitive mechanisms involved in phenomena such as charismatic leadership, romantic relationships, religious experiences, fictional story-telling, drama, and online virtual reality, and will involve collaborating closely with other research group members working on a variety of projects associated with social bonding and community cohesion, including on stage drama. There may also be an opportunity to develop neuroimaging experiments.
The successful candidate will need to have completed (or be about to submit) a relevant PhD and be able to work in a collaborative multidisciplinary team.
The post is a fixed-term post that will end on 30 April 2017, but can start as soon as possible after 1 June 2014.
