Summer of Service Environmental Science Camp Leader
Youth Community Service, Palo Alto, Team Leader:
High school freshman develop leadership skills, teamwork and new friends in a fun, dynamic day camp. We empower students from Palo Alto and East Palo Alto to examine and address social issues through service-learning. The Summer of Service Freshman Leadership Corp camp will focus on the integration of science with service, with a specific focus on the San Francisquito Watershed. Freshmen will study the watersheds, work on restoration projects, and design a multimedia presentation on important watershed issues.
SOS-FLC Team Leader The SOS-FLC Team Leader is an educator with a degree in science (or working towards a degree in science), a counselor and mentor for three 2-week sessions of service and fun. Join our dedicated, fun-loving staff and make a difference this summer!
Specific Responsibilities of the Team Leader: Lead one SOS team of 7-8 high school students. Work with YCS staff in developing watershed curriculum, Supervise students during service projects Facilitate reflection activities Ensure safety of all participants Promote multicultural understanding and appreciation Assist with large group Summer of Service activities Organize and lead team building activities and group games Supervise students on Fun Friday field trips Help facilitate morning and afternoon assemblies Attend one-week staff training and participate in weekly staff meetings during the program
Qualifications: Bachelors degree (or degree in progress); environmental science a plus. Experience working with high school students Enjoy working with diverse groups of students in a multicultural environment Experience working with middle school or high school students Flexible and positive in an intense, dynamic, and sometimes stressful environment Passionate commitment to youth development, community service, service learning,and social justice. Able to work independently and as a team member Must exercise excellent judgment, diplomacy, and sensitivity to all constituents Must be current college student or graduate Available to work 40 hours per week Valid California driver's license and driving record that meets the requirements of the City of Palo Alto.
STARTING DATE: Monday, June 2, 2014 (with some hours prior to June 2nd)
ENDING DATE: Friday, August 1, 2014
Application Timeline: Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until position is filled.
All YCS staff members are also required to submit results from a TB test, place fingerprints on record with the City of Palo Alto Police Department, and submit a copy of your drivers record. YCS can arrange these tests/reports at no cost.
