ENVIRONMENT:
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an international organisation supported by 34 States.*
ECMWF’s principal objectives are the development of numerical methods for medium‑range, monthly and seasonal weather forecasting; the preparation, on a regular basis, of these weather forecasts for distribution to the meteorological services of the Member States; scientific and technical research directed to the improvement of these forecasts; and the collection and storage of appropriate meteorological data. Satellite and in situ observations provide the information for up-to-date global analyses and reanalyses of the atmosphere, ocean and surface. For details see:
ECMWF’s main computing facility includes supercomputers, archiving and data handling systems. ECMWF is connected to the meteorological telecommunication system and to its Member States via efficient networks linking 44 countries.
ECMWF has outgrown its current location and has established a project to explore future accommodation. The first phase of this project is the development of a business case for future accommodation. We are looking to recruit an experienced project manager to drive the project from within ECMWF.
OVERVIEW OF ROLE:
The project manager will be responsible for the internal project management of the “Future accommodation” project. This will require working with and co-ordinating internal staff and external consultants who are available to assist with the project. The successful candidate will report to the Director of the Computing Department, who is the project sponsor.

MAIN DUTIES:
The project manager will have responsibility for:
  • co-ordinating and managing resources within ECMWF;
  • co-ordinating and managing external consultants;
  • preparing project documentation, including papers for ECMWF’s Council;
  • creating and implementing a high-level project plan through to successful delivery in Q1 2018;
  • planning and controlling the project budget;
  • determining requirements and recommending the use of external resources.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Professional skills and experience
PRINCE2 (or equivalent) certification and substantial, in-depth relevant professional experience is required.
Candidates should be able to demonstrate evidence of:
  • a proven track record of project management;
  • an understanding of (or some experience of) the planning, design and construction of office accommodation and HPC data centres; experience of relocation projects would be desirable;
  • managing teams across different disciplines;
  • experience of designing data centres for resiliency, disaster recovery and business continuity.

  • Highly professional, proactive approach, with excellent analytical skills
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written)
  • Good interpersonal skills, listening to and respecting the views of others
The working languages of ECMWF are English, French and German. Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have a good knowledge of one of the other working languages. Interviews will be conducted in English.

REMUNERATION:
The successful candidate will be recruited at grade A4 and the annual basic salary will be £75,723 net of tax. The position will be assigned to the employment category STF-PS as defined in the Staff Regulations.

STARTING DATE:
As soon as possible.
LENGTH OF CONTRACT:
One year for the initial contract, with the possibility of renewal on a year-by-year basis through to completion of the project.
