Senior Research Economist, International Directorate

Department Description
The Research and Strategy Team is responsible for deepening our understanding of international shocks and long-term trends, how they are transmitted, and what the appropriate monetary and prudential policy responses are in a small, open economy with a large financial sector such as the UK. At full strength, the team will contain eight PhD-level researchers. The three academic consultants to the International Directorate (ID) sit with the team.
Job description
You will conduct research and policy analysis in the fields of international macroeconomics, finance and banking. More than half of your time will be spent on research leading to working papers and journal publications. Depending on your skills and background, this will involve either leading or co-authoring research, in conjunction with other members of the team, the consultants to ID and researchers elsewhere both in and outside the Bank. The remainder of the time will largely be spent on policy analysis and economic advice for policy committees and senior decision makers in the Bank.
The precise content of the job will be agreed between management and the successful applicant. However, it is likely to comprise the following:
  • Leading long-term research projects in the areas of interest to ID.
  • Writing in-depth analysis for the policy committees and Bank representatives in international fora.
  • Providing coaching on technical issues to other analysts in ID.
Job Requirements
Candidates should have:
  • An advanced degree in economics or another relevant discipline (a PhD is preferred), or equivalent knowledge
  • A track record of producing high-quality research.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
The following are desirable but not essential:
  • Knowledge of STATA and/or Matlab.
  • Knowledge of international macroeconomics, finance or banking.
