Asia Managing Director READ Global India

Introduction:

READ Global brings together education, enterprise and community development to create lasting social change in rural communities. It was inspired twenty years ago, by a simple wish from a Nepalese trekking guide to Dr Antonia “Toni” Neubauer to have a library for his village. This request made her realize the incredible value access to books and information could offer a community. Embracing the opportunity to give back to a part of the world that had filled her with so much joy during three decades of traveling to rural Asia, Toni harnessed her resources and founded Rural Education and Development (READ) in 1991 in Nepal. READ serves as a catalyst to help communities achieve their educational and economic goals through its belief that empowering rural communities is critical to alleviating global poverty.

Their proven and replicable model focuses on Community Library and Resource Centres as a vehicle for social and economic transformation. Combining education, enterprise and community development, READ collaborates with rural communities to build these Centres and seed for-profit enterprises. Insistent on making an impact that would span generations, READ’s strategy centers on long-term sustainability of the READ Community Library and Resource Centres. With a keen focus on community ownership and enterprise, READ Global pioneered a model that ensured that each Centre could sustain itself over the long run without becoming dependent on foreign aid. From the beginning, READ aimed to make the communities a stakeholder in the process so that the community feels invested in the success of the Centre. In this way each community embraces ownership and management of the READ Centres and their for-profit enterprises.

Today, more than 57 self-sustaining, community-owned, READ Centres are transforming communities in Bhutan, India and Nepal. READ Centres are designed to serve whole communities and their surrounding areas. Resources are available for all – adults, children, students, teachers, women and even those who are illiterate.
In India READ started working from 2008 and focuses on the states of Rajasthan, Manipur, Haryana and West Bengal. READ will soon begin to work in rural parts of Karnataka as well.
