UN Communications Coordinator

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Resident Coordination Advisor, the UN Communications Coordinator will assist in the execution of UN communications and information management in support of the RC/HC, UNCT and UNIG, as well as provide inputs to the design, management and implementation of the UN in Somaliland communications and publication strategies which are geared to influence the development agenda, promote public and media outreach and mobilize political support for the UN.

The UN Communications Coordinator will assist the Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO) and UN Information Group (UNIG) in the implementation and monitoring of the UN’s Communications Strategy and work to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the UN’s support to Somaliland through successful information management and outreach. The UNIG aims to improve the UN's public profile and ensure the access and availability of UN information to key audiences including the Somali public, influential decision makers and local leaders, Diaspora, and the international community.

The National Communications Coordinator also works in close collaboration with the UN Information Group; Programme staff of UN Agencies, local UNSAS Outcome Leads, Government officials, international and local media, multi-lateral and bi-lateral donors and civil society ensuring successful UN communication strategy implementation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of Key Functions:

Support business development and act as the focal point and Communications Coordinator for all RCO Somaliland communications and for all Somaliland media and information focal points, developing productive relationships with key national and international media outlets and agencies.

  • Maintenance of increased coverage and understanding of the UN’s work through regular media contacts and provision of newsworthy information to local and international media.
  • Organization of roundtable discussions, press conferences, briefing sessions, interviews, launches, site visits, etc.
  • Implement a “One UN” image through publicizing significance of local UN reform efforts, joint programmes, common services, organization and implementation of joint UN information campaigns (UN Day, World AIDS Day, etc.)
  • Ensured access for journalists to subject matter experts.
  • Effective responses to inquiries for public information materials
  • Promotion and dissemination of UNCT advocacy materials.
  • Provide summaries of activities to the RCO Updates and other reports.
  • Liaise with UN agencies for regular information about their media and outreach activities, compiling a calendar of media events, and circulating this information..

Plan, design and coordinate communications activities, outreach and media monitoring for the UN in Somaliland, including the development, production and translation of promotional activities, materials, websites, etc and disseminating local media reports to UN mailing lists.

  • Develop, produce, and circulate of promotional activities and materials.
  • Translate key communications documents into Somali, or English, as needed.
  • Update and maintain the UN in Somaliland website (in English and Somali)
  • Design and draft the quarterly UNHT Newsletter (in English and Somali); Identify stories for the Newsletter working with the UNHT and UNIG.
  • Conduct daily media monitoring and disseminate local media reports to UN mailing lists, tracking trends and developments in local media, and flagging any articles that require attention to respective agencies and the UNIG.
  • Explore alternative, non-media communications channels to reach and interact with the UN's key audiences.
  • Provide analysis of major media issues/trends to the RCO Updates.
Implement and monitor of the UNCT Somalia Communication Strategy.
  • Assist the UNIG in the implementation and monitoring of the UNCT Communication Strategy; Coordinate and provide secretariat support to the UNIG during Somaliland missions; Support to UNCT/UNIG communications needs assessments.

Facilitate the coordination of and communication around key missions, UN Days and events.
  • Support the Resident Coordinator Advisor and National Coordination Officer on internal and external communication issues, reports, translation, etc.
  • Undertake other related tasks as may be requested by the RC/HC, Head of RC Office or RC Advisor.

Ensures facilitation of knowledge building and management focusing on achievement of the following results:

  • Identification and synthesis of best practices and lessons learned related to communications and information sharing in Somaliland and Somalia.
  • Monitor practices, and project-specific news and developments in order to ensure guidance to the office that reflects the best and most current available information.
  • Provide contributions to knowledge networks and communities of practice including corporate communications repositories.
  • Organization and provision of trainings and advice to UNHT colleagues on communications.
Impact of Results:

The achievement of the key results will positively impact the UN’s ability to support and influence the development agenda in Somaliland, promote progress and key messages to partners, the public and media through effective communications and dissemination of information on the UN’s mandate, programmes and priorities. This will help to build and strengthen strategic partnerships in the region, promote greater transparency and accountability, and support resource mobilization.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:
  • Master's degree in Media Relations, Journalism, Publishing, Public Relations or in a development related field.
  • A first level university degree with a combination of relevant academic qualifications and 7 year of experience in the field may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience:
  • A minimum of Five years of relevant post masters experience at the national or international level in public relations, communications or advocacy. Or
  • Minimum of Seven years of experience in the above combined with a first level university degree.
  • Previous experience with a multilateral or international organization is desirable.
  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages, good knowledge and experience in handling of web-based management systems.

Language:

  • Fluency and excellent drafting skills in English and Somali is essential
