BEUC, the European consumer organisation, is currently recruiting for the position of assistant within its food team.

The assistant should ideally have:

  • A technical background/degree relevant to food and/or nutrition, and good understanding of related subjects;
  • Sound understanding of nutrition/food safety – covering e.g. food labeling, marketing to children, cloning, novel food, nanotechnologies, food safety.

The tasks would be to provide assistance to the food team by:

  • Ensuring the follow up of institutional deadlines for the issues falling in the scope of the food team;
  • Assistance on reporting on meetings;
  • Follow up calls for meetings with key people e.g. MEPs etc.
  • Drafting reports of the food team and department meetings;
  • Gather data, (scientific) articles and studies on issues relating to food labeling, cloning, food hygiene, nanotechnologies etc.
  • Gather members’ comments, articles and other information when a members’ consultation takes place;
  • Inform members about political developments on monitoring issues;
  • Writing and sending out weekly updates to food officers;
  • Organisation of food officer/TEMs meetings;
  • Assistance in drafting annual monitoring reports on BEUC commitments to the EU Platform on Diet, Physical activity and Health and gathering the information/intelligence required to do so.

The position would require:

  • A good (working) knowledge of the EU institutions;
  • Good communications skills;
  • Understanding of consumer issues and a commitment to advancing the interests of consumers;
  • Fluent English required, French and/or other EU languages an asset;
  • Strong writing and proof-reading skills required;
  • Interest in European consumer protection;
  • Interest in public policy and advocacy.
