Corruption and Governance (C&G)

The Corruption and Governance Division engaged in policy research/support, training and capacity building in the public and private sector as well as civil society on a range of projects across Africa. These include thematic areas of work such as such as long term forecasting on Africa’s futures, natural resource management, climate change governance, building transparent and accountable institutions (including controlling corruption with a focus on issues such as conflicts of interest and political party funding), energy security, taxation accountability, conflicts of interest in public life, elections/democracy as well as party funding.

The division head also serves to oversee and manage the Cape Town office of the Institute from where the Division and its continental projects are managed in the various ISS offices. As a member of top management of the C&G Division Head will report to the Deputy Executive Director and will be responsible for all aspects of divisional management including: fund-raising and donor liaison, financial management, delivery of project outputs, staff management, quality control over the training, research and policy products of the projects of the division, and external engagement. The Institute also places strong emphasis on the role of management in Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting (PMER). S/he will be expected to contribute towards the strategic development of the Institute.

S/he will be responsible for liaison with stakeholders in civil society, government and intergovernmental organisations in Africa and abroad. S/he will have an effective network across the continent, a strong record of publications, policy work and in exceptional fund-raising skills. This is a demanding and high-pressure job that includes substantial travel.

Requirements:

The successful candidate will be a senior person with proven professional competence, with a minimum of a Master’s degree or equivalent in political studies, law or relevant social science field (PhD preferable).

At least 10 years relevant work experience within a policy, politics, research or professional environment with increasing management responsibilities

  • At least five years of management experience
  • Excellent financial management and human resource management skills
  • Excellent research and writing skills, a record of relevant publications
  • Strong track record in fund-raising and donor liaison
  • A strong team leader with excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work in cooperation with governments and civil society
  • Experience in providing direct policy support to governments
  • Excellent English language skills, both written and verbal
  • Fluency in French and/or Portuguese will be an advantage
  • Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines
  • Willingness to travel extensively regionally and internationally

Salary: Salary commensurate with ISS internal salary structure, commencing at R812 000 (total package).
