Civil Society Advisory Committee

Background

The Commonwealth Foundation is an intergovernmental body that seeks to strengthen civil society across the Commonwealth so that it can promote democracy, advance sustainable development and foster intercultural understanding. The Foundation works towards a world where every person is able to fully participate in and contribute to the sustainable development of a peaceful and equitable society. After a period of re-organisation and ahead of a re-launch later this year in 2012, the Foundation is looking for nine new members of its Civil Society Advisory Committee, known as CSAC.

We are looking for dynamic individuals who can help to help build better links between civil society and member governments at an exciting and pivotal time in the Foundation’s history.

Where from?

The Committee is comprised of 14 members in total.

We require one representative from each of the following regions:

  • Africa – East
  • Africa - Southern
  • Africa – West
  • Europe
  • Pacific
  • Pacific - Non Australian/NZ.

We require three representatives from Asia.

Background & Skills

Applications are encouraged from all Commonwealth country nationals. To be a member of CSAC, you must be employed or hold an honorary position in an established civil society organisation. This includes Commonwealth accredited civil society organisations.

The candidates are expected:

  • to be familiar with the Foundation and its work; are active and respected by civil society;
  • have extensive experience of networking and operating at national, regional and international levels;
  • have established relationships and dialogue with their governments.

Of additional benefit will be candidates with experience of the culture sector, civil society capacity building, or who have expertise in areas such as media relations, network building, finance or new technology. Please refer to the Application Form for full details.

Further Details

The term of this voluntary role is on a four year basis from 2012 to 2016.

In consultation with the Foundation, CSAC will meet at least once a year, usually in March. CSAC members are also required to attend the Commonwealth People’s Forum, which takes place every two years. The next will take place in Sri Lanka in October 2013. CSAC members will convene remotely as required. From time to time CSAC will be contacted by staff members with requests for feedback on areas of work and it is expected that this will be provided in a timely manner. CSAC members should be prepared to contribute at least 10 person days to the Foundation each year.

Expenses

The Foundation will cover the cost of either economy airfares or train fares to attend agreed meetings. CSAC representatives who are required to travel on Foundation business will have paid accommodation and receive a per diem allowance.
