Summary:
The Communications Manager will be responsible for strategic communications for mothers2mothers. The position is based in Los Angeles, California and reports to the co-founder and International Director of mothers2mothers.

Job Description:
mothers2mothers uses a simple and proven model to eliminate transmission of HIV and sustain the health of women and children. We educate, employ and empower mothers living with HIV to work alongside doctors and nurses in understaffed health centers and clinics to provide life-saving information and one-on-one support to other women. mothers2mothers was founded in 2001 in Cape Town, South Africa and has since enrolled more than 1 million women in nine countries.

The Communications Manager will develop and lead mothers2mothers’ communications strategies and initiatives to support its mission and fundraising efforts. Responsibilities will include communications planning, media relations, speechwriting, press and public event execution, collateral development and managing Web site content and social media presence.

Specific responsibilities include:
• communications strategy – adapt and implement mothers2mothers communication strategy and oversee annual development of a sophisticated and dynamic communications plan that supports resource mobilization
• internal communications – facilitate timely and consistent communications across mothers2mothers teams on three continents about communications activities, imperatives and needs; serve as a liaison and thoughtful counselor to senior leadership
• writing - draft engaging copy for a variety of audiences and purposes – speeches, opinion editorials, blogs, promotional materials – for digital, print and spoken formats; refine key messages and integrate mothers2mothers newly developed messaging into all communications assets; adapt communications assets for the US, UK and South Africa with a sensitivity to audience and context
• media relations – evaluate, respond to and manage requests from media; establish strong relationships with relevant media contacts; provide media training and support to staff and Mentor Mothers; prioritize and direct results-oriented Web and social media activities
• branding – develop and implement branding standards within marketing materials to increase consistency and fundraising capacity
• management – recruit, train and manage intern(s) and coordinate monthly meetings with communications advisory committee

Basic Requirements:
• Degree in writing, journalism, communications, marketing or closely related field with 7-10 years of experience in communications and/or marketing.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Advanced degree in communications, marketing, public and international affairs or public health; and 7-10 years communications and management experience
• Experience working for a global organization
• Proven track record of developing and implementing creative, robust communications strategies
• Experience developing and maintaining a brand and crafting marketing strategies and language to influence donors and other stakeholders
• Superior command of the English language
• Proficiency with Apple computers and vertical response,
• Experience translating complex scientific and policy issues and research into effective messages for a variety of audiences
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse partners and senior leaders on three continents; ability to operate collaboratively and communicating clearly, often under time pressure, and with discretion, tact, diplomacy, cultural sensitivity and empathy
• Knowledge of and facility with digital communications
• Experience using Salesforce software
• Motivated by service, humility and compassion for helping people
• Passion for eliminating pediatric AIDS and mothers2mothers mission

Other Requirements:
• Ability to work extra hours occasionally, including evenings and weekends, as needed and to accommodate conference calls across extended time zones.
• Occasional domestic and international travel required
