Position Overview

We are seeking a Māori clinical and/or health psychologist to work within the existing clinic team at the Psychology Clinic at Massey University, and contribute to the training of professional psychologists. We currently operate a Health Conditions Service funded by MidCentral Health. The Health Conditions Team is an exciting and dynamic team at the cutting edge of innovative practice. We also provide support to students in training programmes for registration as clinical psychologists and psychologists.

You will be expected to predominantly work alongside Māori adults and children affected by chronic illnesses by delivering psychological services to them and/or their whānau. In particular, service will be delivered to people affected by diabetes, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, and other life-limiting conditions. The aim of the service is to improve the quality of life, reduce distress, enhance coping changes, improve adjustment, and assist with decisions about information needs and treatment choices.

There will be an opportunity to assist in the education of clients and the wider community. The services will have associated research projects and there will be opportunities for the clinical psychologist to contribute to these.

Contributions to professional training programmes will include providing workshops for trainees, interns and practicum students as well as supervision of students’ practical work and advice with regard to specific cases. As a member of our training programme team/s, you will be able to contribute your expertise to the development of the programmes and collaborate with others responsible for delivering the programme/s.

You will be a Registered Psychologist under the Clinical Scope of Practice or with specialist competencies in Health Psychology. You will also hold a valid Annual Practising Certificate; and have a postgraduate qualification in Clinical Psychology and / or Health Psychology. The Clinic is a training centre for the School of Psychology and students will observe and sometimes participate in assessment and therapy activities. Therefore, it is expected candidates will demonstrate sound bicultural knowledge of psychological practice within a health setting. Holding a doctoral degree will also be an advantage.

Job description

Purpose statement

To undertake bicultural health psychology practice in a professional practice setting and contribute to training professional psychologists.

Responsible to

Head of School.

Accountable to:
Director, Psychology Clinic, and Coordinator of the Health Conditions Service

Key accountabilities

To provide Clinical and/or Health Psychology services to clients.

The Clinical and/or Health Psychologist will:
• Bring a cultural awareness to his/her work.
• Serve to better enable Māori clients to access services and enable services to be delivered in a culturally appropriate way.
• Liaise with Iwi health providers.
• Provide psychological and/or behavioural assessment and interventions for clients with long-term health conditions.
• Engage in tasks related to service promotion and service development.
• Liaise and consult with supervisor/Service Coordinator regularly.
• Attend weekly team meetings.
• Contribute as required to the day-to-day running of the clinic.
• Develop service presentations for health professionals in the community in conjunction with the health conditions team.
• Contribute as required to the organisation and running of group interventions.
• Engage in research activities related to the service as required.

Undertake administrative duties associated with the Service activities as directed by the Service Coordinator, including the maintenance of professional and administrative records; the production of psychological reports and letters to referral agencies; and serving on appropriate committees.

To contribute to the training of professional psychologists.

The Clinical and/or Health Psychologist will:
• Develop and deliver appropriate training workshops for trainees, interns and practicum students.
• Supervise students’ in practical training.
• Provide advice and support for students in practical training.
• Undertake other tasks related to enhancing the learning of students in training programmes, as required. You may be required to support student training on a campus other than the one where you are situated from time-to-time.
• Regularly liaise and consult with training programme staff.
• Contribute to the development of a supportive atmosphere for Psychology students and develop strategies for enhancing the experiences of students from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Undertake administration related to the contributions you are requested to make to professional training programmes.

Undertake such other clinical and/or health and professional development activities as directed by the Service Coordinator of the Health Conditions Service, the Clinic Director and/or the Head of School.

Provide a model of good practice for trainees and interns.

Maintain an Annual Practicing Certificate as a professional psychologist.

Co-operate within the School and share School objectives to advance the knowledge and practice of Psychology.

Comply with the University's obligation under its Charter regarding the Treaty of Waitangi.

Person specification

Qualifications

The appointee must have a DClinPsych, PGDipClinPsych, or an equivalent Health Psychology qualification.
Registration as a Clinical Psychologist or Psychologist with the Psychologists’ Board.

Experience

Experience around practice with Māori, as well as cultural and practice supervision of clinicians and students.
Appropriate relevant practical experience in Clinical and/or Health Psychology services to clients.
Familiarity with University-level training programmes, and experience in tertiary settings will be an advantage.
