Background

WWF has a long established presence in the Mekong region, starting in Vietnam in 1990. Since then, WWF operations have grown to four Country offices based in Cambodia (Phnom Penh), Laos (Vientiane), Thailand (Bangkok) & Vietnam (Hanoi), including a Regional team in the Hanoi, Vientiane and Bangkok offices. The ‘Greater Mekong Programme Office’ was officially formed in November 2005 merging WWF Indochina (Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam) and WWF Thailand. In order to be relevant with partners at provincial levels and deliver conservation results in landscapes, GMPO has also developed 20 field offices across the 4 countries and 6 landscapes.

Following a strong track record of conservation delivery over the last 20 years, WWF has established both the credibility and presence to deliver conservation impact at all levels from provincial, to national to regional.

WWF Greater Mekong Programme Office has embarked on new strategic plan FY11-FY15. The new strategic plan outlines changes in the way WWF GMPO operates, both in conservation and operation aspects.

I. Major Function

Lead communications for WWF-Thailand’s Illegal Wildlife Trade campaign, in conjunction with relevant WWF national, regional and international programmes, offices and campaign

partners.

II. Major Responsibilities

• In line with the campaign strategy, lead communications strategy development and implementation for WWF-Thailand’s Illegal Wildlife Trade, with work plans and interim milestones, to achieve set objectives.

• Use best practices, methodologies and procedures to ensure the effectiveness of the campaign communications

• Establish positive working relationships with national online, print and broadcast journalists, editorial writers and columnists, as well as other influential media, to build positive profile and influence for the campaign

• Design, execute and monitor campaign media strategies and activities, including press conferences, one-to-one briefings, press release, and other written materials.

• Ensure consistency of WWF external messaging related to the campaign, and provide a “radar function” on emerging issues related to the campaign. Work with appropriate stakeholders to formulate responses, as well as prepare and update critical materials such as Q & As, and messaging on hot issues to help limit and prevent crisis communications.

• Build partnerships and/or support relationships with relevant design and media agencies, professional groups, NGOs and others as identified in the campaign communications strategy.

• Working with the Campaign Manager, DTL Landscape Manager, Elephant Project Manager, Policy Coordinator and relevant regional and international WWF expertise, produce and commission, as appropriate, relevant communications and marketing products such as advertisements, social media strategies, video and television materials, and events.

• Where useful, engage with celebrities and influential figures, and create possibilities for them to represent WWF’s campaign asks.

• Use and develop existing platforms (e.g., CONNECT, google sites) for effective internal communications to build and maintain WWF staff buy-in for the campaign and generate optimum support.

• Use, design and develop printed graphic media e.g. Photoshop

• Prepare communications project descriptions, budgets, and progress reports on a timely basis, as mutually agreed, for the Campaign Manager.

• Organize and oversee the work of short-term contractors where appropriate.

• Undertake other tasks as determined by the line manager.

This Job Description covers the main tasks and conveys the spirit of the sort of tasks that are anticipated proactively from staff. Other tasks may be assigned as necessary according to organizational needs.

Internal

• WWF-Thailand Campaign Manager, WWF-Thailand Country Director, WWF-Thailand campaign team and support staff;

• WWF-Greater Mekong strategy leaders and communications director;

• WWF-International global campaign team and supporting offices

External

• Journalists, creative agencies, multi-media production, designers, partners, donors, other NGOs and stakeholders, freelance project staff

IV. Requirements

  1. Education and Qualifications

• Degree in communications media, marketing or related subject

  1. Knowledge

• Prior knowledge of WWF's organizational structure, goals, policies and activities is a distinct advantage

• Interest in conservation and environmental issues

• Adheres to WWF’s values, which are: Engaging, Optimistic, Determined, Knowledgeable

  1. Experience

• At least five years senior relevant professional experience;

• Familiarity with a wide range of media communication and campaign tools;

  1. General Skill

• Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate complex issues in a clear manner to a wide variety of audiences across diverse channels (online, TV, print, radio, etc.)

• Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal, supported by good computer and online skills

• Proven success record in advocacy / change communications;

• Excellent presentation and motivation skills

• Fluent English and Thai desirable
