Africa Institute of South Africa, a statutory research institution based in Pretoria, invites applications from suitably qualified individuals for positions in various divisions within the institute. Applications from candidates in the affirmative action categories are particularly encouraged:

Research Specialist: Sustainable Development (2 Posts)
Salary: R300 000 - R330 000 per annum (all-inclusive)
(5-year renewable performance-based contract)


Requirements: • MA degree in Social Sciences or relevant fields • Good understanding of African affairs • Good publication record • At least 4 accredited journal articles • Ability to write policy papers, reports and source for funding • Good written and verbal communication skills in English (knowledge of Arabic, Portuguese and French will be an added advantage) • Driver’s licence.


Duties: • Conduct research on and perform related activities in the designated research area, knowledge transfer and skills in African countries • Undertake field research and produce manuscripts for publications within and outside AISA • Disseminate knowledge generated through research by participating in conferences and seminars • Support knowledge transfer programmes • Network with stakeholders and experts working in areas related to AISA research and drive fundraising to augment resources available to support AISA research.


Sales Representative: Publications
Salary: R180 000 - R200 000 per annum

Requirements: • 3-year degree or diploma in Sales/Marketing Management or related field • 3-5 years’ appropriate experience will serve as a strong recommendation • Own transport • Driver’s licence.

Duties: • Sales management • Build customer relationships • Organise book launches for new publications • Make arrangements for book reviews • Produce promotional material • Conceptualise the sales plan
• Establish new distribution strategy • Increase revenue through sales • Advertise new titles on website.

Assistant Editor: Publications
Salary: R190 000 - R210 000 per annum

Requirements: • BA or postgraduate degree in English and Publishing or related field • Minimum of
3 years’ relevant experience in the publishing environment • Excellent written and verbal communication skills • Ability to work in a team, under pressure and to tight deadlines • Experience in project management and knowledge of development challenges facing South Africa as well as current affairs, will be advantageous • Driver’s licence.

Duties: • Coordinate and manage the production of AISA publications • Coordinate editorial activities and functions • Manage and coordinate a team of freelancers, such as typesetters, designers, copy editors, proof readers etc.

Communications Officer: Corporate Affairs Division
Salary: R190 000 - R210 000 per annum

Requirements: • 3-year degree or diploma in Communication Management, Public Relations or related field • 2-3 years’ appropriate experience will serve as a strong recommendation • Good verbal and written communication skills • Understanding of new electronic media would be advantageous • Ability to work within an everchanging environment with flexibility and acceptance • Driver’s licence.

Duties: • Implement a community strategy • Develop media networks and assist with visibility of AISA, both locally and internationally • Issue statements about major events • Draft press releases • Be responsible for internal adverts/the AISA newsletter • Monitor the intranet and summarise key management decisions and make these available to staff on the intranet • Update information on the website • Perform other communication-related tasks and when required.
