Organizational Setting

One of the main functions assigned to the IAEA under its Statute is to foster the exchange of scientific and technical information and the dissemination of knowledge in the nuclear field among Member States. To enable the effective exchange and dissemination of information relevant to the IAEA's work and mandate between the Secretariat and Member States, the Division of Conference and Document Services coordinates and supports the implementation of these activities by organizing meetings and conferences, issuing documents in the six official IAEA languages, i.e. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish, and preparing and distributing publications.

The Spanish Translation Section is one of six Translation Sections in the Division providing translations of a broad range of documents and publications into the official languages. It is responsible for translating documents into Spanish.

Main Purpose

As a member of a team led by the Section Head, the Translation Assistant processes, formats, incorporates changes in and proofreads documents translated into Spanish.

Working Relationships

The Translation Assistant works in a team with staff in the Section and in the Division on issues related to text production in Spanish. He/she may contact staff in the Language Services Support Section to seek clarification regarding documents.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Process, proofread and finalize texts in Spanish in accordance with established quality control guidelines, ensuring accuracy and consistency of texts by checking spelling, punctuation, grammar, syntax and completeness against the original English texts.
  • Check and format texts containing tables, charts, figures, diagrams, references to ensure accurate presentation.
  • Pre-translate texts using computer-assisted translation software (CAT).
  • Create, where appropriate, the final version of texts as PDF files for dispatching, archiving and uploading on the IAEA's website.
  • Align externally translated texts and update the CAT memory with reliable texts.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Professional knowledge: Good knowledge of the translation process and ability to follow established guidelines.
  • Computer skills: Proficiency in MS Office 2010, which is the IAEA standard (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Good knowledge of specialized translation software or ability to learn about such software quickly and apply new technologies.
  • Organizing skills: Ability to establish priorities and respect deadlines. Ability to work independently and accurately under time pressure for extended periods.
  • Accuracy and ability to pay attention to detail.
  • Interpersonal skills: Ability to work effectively in an international team with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

Education, Experience and Language Skills

  • Completed secondary education.
  • Minimum of four years of relevant working experience.
  • Perfect command of Spanish as mother tongue or principal language of education.
  • Successful completion of the Spanish Translation Section's language and typing tests desirable.
  • English Language Test (Level 1) and English Typing Test (Level 2) to IAEA standard.
  • Experience in processing and proofreading Spanish texts with a high standard of speed and accuracy.
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English. Knowledge of another official IAEA language (Arabic, Chinese, French or Russian) an asset.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at €34 469 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), six weeks' annual vacation, pension plan and health insurance.
