JOB TITLE : Crisis Response Campaigner

REPORTS TO : CAMPAIGNS DIRECTOR

The Crisis Response Campaigner is part of the Climate & Energy unit, reports to the Greenpeace Africa Campaigns Director and has functional relationships with Greenpeace International. The position is based in South Africa with frequent travel to other African countries and internationally.

OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB
2011 has seen a massive increase in extreme weather events resulting in enormous social and economic losses in Africa. As a member of the Programme Team, the job purpose is to participate in the planning and execution of campaign project work in order to achieve the objectives of Greenpeace Africa, as detailed in the annual Organizational Development Plan (ODP), currently focused on promoting forest conservation in the DRC and the Congo Basin, preventing fisheries exploitation in West Africa, and developing an energy revolution in South Africa to fight climate change.

MAIN AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
CAMPAIGN WORK
Participate in and contribute to the proposals and assessments of the annual Campaign Programme, and work within the Programme framework. Assist in the preparation of the annual programme plan, and thereafter prepare an annual individual work plan with measurable performance objectives.

Undertake specific campaign project work. Project work is likely to involve all or some of the following techniques: non-violent direct action, public communication and engagement activities, media work, political and corporate work and the use of legal and scientific approaches to issues.

Undertake appropriate research and utilize information in pursuit of campaign objectives.

Ensure the campaign project strategies have realistic objectives, Adhere to individual campaign project deadlines and manage personal workload accordingly. Manage resources in such a way that the campaign objectives are met within the approved budgets. Take responsibility for specific campaign project budgets.

Assist in the development of the social, economic, political, legislative and business components of the campaigns in order to ensure that Greenpeace Africa can respond effectively to strategic opportunities, and influence the development of relevant national and international legislation and practices.

Provide expertise and input, as a member of a team, on the development of global campaign strategies, projects, and funding proposals. Keep abreast of external movements and trends, in the context of the agreed global campaign strategy, in order to identify local campaign opportunities.
Coordinate and manage all logistical arrangements for various campaign activities as required, including information gathering and facilitation, physical trips to project areas for the project team, d journalists, and other parties;

COMMUNICATIONS & REPRESENTATION
Contribute to the development, planning and implementation of the Greenpeace Africa communications strategy.

Establish communication and ensure collaboration with local authorities, UN, NGOs, partners, community leaders and all other important stakeholders within each project as required. Represent Greenpeace at meetings, coordination bodies, stakeholders and local communities as required.

Develop, build alliances, and maintain good relationships with other NGOs, and other relevant groups.

Prepare substantive briefings and updates to inform staff, media and stakeholders on specific campaign issues, progress and outcomes.

Apply communication and interpersonal skills to interact with suppliers, media, external opinion formers and authorities on a number of issues of varying complexity. Deliver a professional and well-informed image of Greenpeace and its campaigns to the public and through the media.

In conjunction with the GP Africa communications team, design, create and use a range of communications tools (direct actions, direct communication, traditional and new media, briefing sheets and public information, and other tools) to communicate with target audiences and to achieve campaign objectives.

Maintain accurate information management systems and procedures to ensure open access to the campaign by other campaigners. Ensure that campaign plans (objectives, activities and time schedules) are communicated clearly and in a timely manner within the organization.

Accept joint responsibility for the administration of the campaign team and take on specific tasks as delegated by the Campaign Director.

Take responsibility for sharing skills and assisting the development of other members of the team.

Provide input and contribute to teamwork and team building within Greenpeace Africa as required, including taking the lead on projects, translation, and facilitation of meetings.
OTHER
Ensure that Greenpeace security guidelines are followed and report any security incidents as stipulated in the Security Manual.

Supervise external consultants, volunteers and/or staff from other parts of Greenpeace.

Assume any other responsibility appropriate to the role, as directed by the Campaigns Director.

Undertake skills development courses as agreed by the line manager.

MINIMUM REQUIREIMENTS
• Degree in a relevant subject
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience of corporate or political campaigning
• Basic understanding of climate science and politics including adaption and extreme weather events would be advantageous.
• Experience in Crisis Response Management
• Ability to analyze environmental issues in terms of campaign opportunities and overall strategic objectives.
• Specific expertise in one or more, and ability to become skilled in the following key campaign outputs: use of Direct Action; public Communication and Engagement activities; use of Traditional and New Media;
• Ability to manage external consultants, volunteers and staff.
• Experience in project management.
• Experience of and preference for team working.
• Experience of employing effective negotiation and persuasion.
• Ability to make and maintain effective contacts and relationships.
• Ability to communicate effectively and appropriate with a wide range of people both verbally and in writing.
• Experience of working in high stress environments
• Experience of working in diverse work environments.
