Established in 1951, IOM is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

This is a request for CVs/expression of interest for the position of Database Assistant. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is seeking qualified candidates to join the team in Department of Migration Management in Geneva, Switzerland.

The recruitment/appointment and entitlements are subject to funding availability/ confirmation. Applications from qualified female candidates are especially encouraged.

Context:

Under the direct supervision of the Senior Specialist/ Assistance to Vulnerable Migrants Unit, and the Researcher and Data Analysis Specialist, the successful candidate will support the IOM Global Human Trafficking Database research and data collection project.

Core Functions/ Responsibilities:

  1. Undertake the analysis, cleaning and validation of human trafficking data held within the MiMOSA (Migrant Management Operational Systems Application) Database. Address issues by coordinating with missions and the MiMOSA team.

  2. Assist with the on-going process of moving the MiMOSA Database/CTM Module to the web, and increasing the number of missions using the database.

  3. Maintain and update a spreadsheet of key variable data on cases not included in MiMOSA by liaising with IOM missions who do not currently have access to MiMOSA.

  4. Assist with the development of a database evaluation tool which will be used to evaluate the effective use of an external database created with guidance from IOM.

  5. Respond to internal and external data requests, including the provision of technical support to IOM missions and governmental and civil society actors.

  6. Produce and deliver presentations on the database and conduct related research.

  7. Undertake training of new database users and update training materials.

  8. Analyze qualitative and quantitative data held within the database, to produce thematic “fact sheets”, country and/or regional and/or thematic reports.

  9. Contribute to the finalization and assist with the global dissemination of a handbook for anti-trafficking professionals which explains the IOM Database and methodology.

  10. Assist the Researcher and Programme Coordinator with logistics and coordination for field work, research papers and capacity building workshops.

  11. Review and provide comments on IOM research papers and reports with a research and data collection element.

  12. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

a) completed university degree from an accredited academic institution preferably in, Political Science or Social Sciences, International Relations, Law or equivalent education and training; b) five years of experience in data cleaning, validation and analysis, research, report writing and public speaking; c) experience in qualitative and quantitative analytical and research skills; d) developed understanding of the issue of human trafficking and/or irregular migration; e) good working knowledge of Microsoft access; f) experience with MiMOSA an advantage; g) knowledge of SPSS or related social science analytical tools an advantage.

Languages

Thorough knowledge in English. Knowledge of other languages (French, Spanish, Russian) an advantage.

NOTE:

*The total renumeration package is approximately CHF 2,850 per month.
