Marks Sattin Economist, Tax Policy

A leading global fast-moving consumer goods company seeks a seasoned, commercially-minded economist to analyse national consumption tax policies and their impact on market dynamics.

Economist will primarily be expected to research, compile, analyse, interpret and prepare data on taxation policies. He/She will apply economic theory and develop models to:

  • Interpret and comment on academic, NGO, international financial institution and governmental research, proposals, and announcements concerning relevant taxation issues.
  • Work with other stakeholders, including external researchers and academics, business and civil society, to support thought leadership on consumption taxation policies and their impacts on business, government revenue and black market activities.

In addition, the Economist will:

  • Forecast the effects of multiple tax policy scenarios on company brands, competitor brands, black market activities and contribution to national budget;
  • Define optimal taxation rates and types (specific, ad valorem, mixed, etc) to position and price brand portfolios, maximise profits, and increase competitiveness;
  • Calculate optimal taxation rates to discourage black market activities and maximise government revenue;

Qualifications

  • Ph.D in Economics or Masters in Economics with extensive experience in tax policy research and analysis.
  • At least six years' experience with economic analysis, with at least three of those years focusing on tax issues, acquired in a Ministry of Finance, Revenue Department, a research institute, an international organisation or economic consultancy firm.
  • Ideal candidate will have commercial awareness, and excel at translating economic theory and models for many audiences, including business, international organisation and government stakeholders.
