Syracuse University seeks an accomplished and innovative leader to serve as Dean of the Martin J. Whitman School of Management. The best candidates will be visionary, entrepreneurial leaders in academic and/or corporate settings with keen abilities to coalesce and lead others in pursuit of excellence. These candidates will have the insight and talent to leverage the University’s many assets to continue to build Whitman as a unique, high-quality business school playing a critical role in an institution with high aspirations for quality and impact.
The Whitman School of Management is an integral part of the University’s dynamic vision and the new Dean will be a key leader in advancing the University’s goals,as well as continuing to enhance business education through the many disciplines and programs within the School.
Established in 1919, the School of Management of Syracuse University was one of the first accredited collegiate business schools in the United States. The School is comprised of five departments: Accounting, Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises, Finance (including Value Investing and Real Estate), Management and Marketing (including Marketing Management, Retail Management, and Supply Chain Management).
Whitman now has more than 80 full-time faculty members. Nearly 2,000 undergraduate students are currently enrolled at Whitman with significant representations of women and members of underrepresented groups. At the graduate level, there are approximately 330 MBA students, 120 MS students, and 35 Ph.D. students. Whitman has more than 25,000 living alumni around the world. The School was honored with a naming gift from Martin and Lois Whitman in 2003, and the Joseph I. Lubin School of Accounting was also dedicated that year. Mr. Whitman is the senior advisor to the Orange Value Fund, the investment vehicle of the School’s signature Value Investing program.
In addition, specialized Master’s degrees such as the MS in Accounting, MS in Entrepreneurship, MS in Finance, and MS in Supply Chain Management are offered in conjunction with full-time and online MBA programs. Doctoral programs in every major area – Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Management, Marketing, and Supply Chain Management – engage a research-active faculty in high-quality scholarship.
Reporting to the Vice Chancellor and Provost, the Dean will provide leadership and oversight for the strategic, academic, and administrative affairs of the Whitman School and is charged with advancing its research, teaching, and engagement missions. The Dean will assume a leadership role in external relations, including effective fund-raising and building and maintaining strong relationships with alumni and the business community. The Dean will be knowledgeable about current trends and emerging issues in business education and have high ethical standards and a strong commitment to diversity. S/he will be an innovative thinker, results-oriented leader, and a champion of excellence who is highly legible to both academics and business leaders. S/he will also provide leadership in developing international programs and partnerships to help better prepare Whitman students for global opportunities.
Qualifications: The successful candidate will possess a terminal degree and proven experience as a leader – sitting dean, associate dean, department chair, and program director – in an academic or professional field related to the disciplines within a nationally accredited (AACSB) business school. Experience in related management fields, research organizations, or not-for-profit entities is also acceptable.
