Malaria Consortium Advocacy Officer in London

Malaria Consortium is one of the world's leading non-profit organisations dedicated to the comprehensive control of malaria and other communicable diseases in Africa and Southeast Asia. Malaria Consortium works with communities, government and non-government agencies, academic institutions, and local and international organisations, to ensure good evidence supports delivery of effective services, providing technical support for monitoring and evaluation of programmes and activities for evidence-based decision-making and strategic planning. The organisation works to improve not only the health of the individual, but also the capacity of national health systems, which helps relieve poverty and support improved economic prosperity.

The role is based in Malaria Consortium’s UK office in London. Malaria Consortium operates in two main regions, being Asia and Africa with the UK office providing a management and support function to the regional management teams. The majority of Malaria Consortium’s staff are based regionally and management responsibility is devolved to the regions for programme delivery with 3 of the Global Heads based in the UK. The UK office supports specific programmes with global coverage, our global external advocacy and communications team, global HR and part of the technical team are also based here.
The Advocacy Officer will play a key role in the delivery of advocacy projects and activities to support Malaria Consortium’s international profile and to help position the organisation and its issues in the UK, Europe and globally. The Advocacy Officer will develop innovative and creative ideas and projects to help deliver the External Communications team’s strategic objectives. He/she will represent the organisation within certain formal and ad hoc advocacy networks and groups and with parliamentarians, policy makers and other key stakeholders. The Advocacy Officer will also provide general support as required for the development, communication and monitoring of advocacy across the organisation.

The successful candidate will have:
• A Degree/Masters in Development Studies, Social Policy, Development Economics or similar field, or equivalent work experience • Significant experience in a similar advocacy role • Good knowledge of international development and development policy frameworks, such as aid effectiveness mechanisms, MDG frameworks, etc. • Good knowledge of UK Parliamentary system and policy process • Good knowledge of major bilateral and multilateral donors and their funding interests/priorities • The ability to travel for up to two weeks at a time to countries where the organisation operates • Excellent knowledge of the principles of advocacy and what it involves at a high level of stakeholder engagement • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal • The ability to work in multi-cultural environments and to manage a busy workload with fluctuating deadlines • Sound minute-taking and administrative skills

Experience of working for an international not for profit organisation is desirable but not essential.
