Media Manager

ONE is a campaign and advocacy organization backed by three million people from around the world and every walk of life who are committed to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. We hold world leaders to account for the promises made to the poorest, and we press them to support better policies and more effective aid and trade reform. We also work with leaders in Africa to support greater democracy, accountability and transparency so these resources can be effectively deployed.  ONE operates from Berlin, Brussels, Johannesburg, London, Paris and Washington DC.
We are looking for a Media Manager to support our high profile media outreach and campaigns and help us increase the media’s coverage of our issues, international development and Africa.  The Media Manager will work closely with the key communications staff in Washington DC, Paris, Brussels, Berlin and Johannesburg and will be supported by other media staff across the organisation as required.
The ideal candidate will be a communications professional with a demonstrated interest in development issues and African current affairs. The right candidate will also have the ability to communicate complex issues concisely, and an understanding of how the media can influence policy change. Experience of working with development journalists within the UK media and existing contacts in this field would be a distinct advantage.

Principal duties and responsibilities:
• Lead on ONE’s media activity in the UK, devising and implementing proactive and reactive media strategies as required
• Identify and target key UK media outlets (both traditional and online), developing relationships with journalists
• Pitch highly impactful and high level stories to print, broadcast and online media
• Draft and sell in press releases; edit articles for publication, contributing to producing web content
• Manage requests for media interviews and creating media interview opportunities
• Analyse media coverage of development issues and identify trends and opportunities for ONE with a particular focus on the UK
• As a member of the global communications team, contribute to the development of ONE’s media positions across Europe and globally
• Any other duties as required
Skills and competencies required for the role:
• Proven track record in delivering effective media strategies
• Demonstrable creativity and a flair for identifying interesting and newsworthy stories and successfully pitching them to a range of media outlets.
• Well-organised and able to deal confidently with media inquiries
• A thorough understanding of the media market and requirements of different kinds of media i.e. print, TV, radio, and web
• Experience of working with high profile individuals
• Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment and strong interpersonal skills
• Outstanding written and verbal communications skills including the ability to synthesise complicated policy issues into digestible products and to deal with both elite and popular media and specialist and non-specialist audiences
• Excellent time management, forward planning, and prioritisation skills, with the ability to work under pressure and to deadlines
• Exercises good judgment in managing risks
• Experience of using social media for campaigning would be an advantage
• Knowledge of Africa and development issues
• A commitment to ONE’s policy priorities and a clear understanding of the links between policy, lobbying, campaigning and media work
• Fluent English essential, other European languages an advantage
