The person and the job:
The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is looking for a Researcher – Hydrology/Geohydrology and Remote Sensing who will work alongside other scientists at the Institute and with partners in the IWMI-Nepal program, which aims to enhance the understanding of hydrological processes and water resources management in the Himalayan river basins to meet the challenges of food security, water scarcity and the impacts of climate change. The position holder will be based at the Nepal office of IWMI in Kathmandu, Nepal, but the work will focus on the Himalayan river basins in Asia. The incumbent will work under the guidance of the Leader for IWMI’s research theme on Water Availability and Access, and will be co-supervised by the Head of the Nepal Office of IWMI.
You will:
- use remote sensing products and other spatial datasets to support basin-wide hydrological modeling, especially in un-gauged Himalayan river basins;
- develop new remote sensing-driven approaches for measurement of agriculture-relevant hydrological components in river basins;
- be involved in the modeling and assessment of surface water and groundwater interactions at catchment scales;
- contribute expertise in remote sensing (RS)/geographic information system (GIS) and basin modeling to other projects in relevant research portfolios of the CGIAR Research Program on Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE) and the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS), in Asia and Africa, particularly in relation to water resources management systems and decision-making under climate variability and change; and
- prepare journal articles, research reports and conference papers.
You must possess:
- a PhD in Hydrology, Remote Sensing, Water Resources Management or a related discipline;
- an in-depth understanding of basin hydrology and runoff generation processes, including surface water/groundwater interactions, and snow and ice-melt in the mountain catchments;
- experience in diverse hydrological and water resources analyses models, tools and techniques, and their application in the context of agricultural water management;
- competency in the application of GIS and remote sensing techniques to hydrological problems and irrigation management;
- strong analytical and numerical skills;
- the ability to process large hydrological and spatial datasets;
- independent and critical scientific thought;
- a good command of both oral and written English;
- the ability to effectively establish priorities, and plan, organize, implement and monitor work activities;
- good interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people in a multicultural environment; and
- sensitivity and respect for diversity.
It would be useful if you have:
- knowledge of agricultural and water management issues in Asia;
- a good understanding of the water-energy nexus issues;
- work experience in developing countries; and
- a proven record of relevant peer-reviewed articles in international journals, where the applicant is the first author.
This is an internationally recruited position with a competitive salary and benefits package, which includes a housing allowance, transport, education, shipping assistance, annual home leave, retirement and health insurance package. IWMI’s policy is to appoint staff initially on three-year contracts which are subject to renewal, depending on performance and the Institute’s needs.
The International Water Management Institute (www.iwmi.org) is an international, non-profit research organization dedicated to improving the management of land and water resources for food, livelihoods and the environment.
