Financial analyst

With profound research and advice, Profundo aims to make a practical contribution to sustainability and social justice. Quality comes first to meet the goals of our clients. Thematically we focus on international commodity chains, the financial sector and Corporate Social Responsibility. Our international client base includes non-governmental organizations, research institutes and government institutions, as well as pension funds and other investors.
To expand our services for investors, we are looking for an experienced
Financial analyst
to write analyst reports on (listed) commodity producers in the mining, agriculture, fisheries, forestry and energy sectors, as well as other sectors with significant social and environmental impacts (food, garments, weapons, electricity, etc.). The reports will be distributed among selected investors globally. Initially, the focus will be on companies active in the oil palm plantation sector, but over time our sector coverage will expand.
Using field research from our partners as well as data retrieved from company publications, analyst reports, rating agencies, market studies and policy papers, you will analyse how the sustainability profile of a company might affect the financial and non-financial risks to which its investors are exposed. Using financial modelling techniques, you will assess the possible repercussions of the social, human rights, biodiversity and climate change impacts of the company’s operations and supply chains on equity investors, bond investors and lenders. Based on these analyses, you will comment on mainstream rating agencies and analyst views, identifying the blind spots and short-termism in their reports.
Additionally, you will be involved in financial analyses aiming to identify the financial stakeholders of all kinds of companies and analysing the influence of financiers on (non-) sustainable company activities. This research will help NGOs and governments to understand how to engage with financial institutions and develop policy initiatives to promote responsible investment practices in the sector.
We expect you to:
  • be a passionate researcher with strong analytical skills;
  • have 5 to 10 years of working experience as equity or credit analyst;
  • use and further develop financial evaluation models to deal adequately with sustainability impacts;
  • be familiar with key developments in the field of corporate social responsibility, while familiarity with the social and environmental issues relevant for commodity producers is seen as a pro;
  • feel highly motivated to foster the integration of sustainability and social justice in the corporate and financial sectors;
  • enjoy maintaining contacts with research partners and clients worldwide;
  • have the ability to coach younger colleagues in further developing their research skills;
  • have superior English writing skills, while additional language skills (especially in Dutch and Bahasa) are seen as an advantage;
  • work predominantly from our Amsterdam office.
We offer:
  • the opportunity to apply your analytical skills for highly relevant social objectives;
  • a small organization that provides plenty of room for individual initiatives and for the development of your research, project management and acquisition skills;
  • a wide network of inspiring clients from all over the world;
  • a friendly office next to the Amsterdam Sloterdijk train station;
  • a contract for 28 to 40 hours per week (to be determined in consultation);
  • flexible working hours and the option to work part-time from home;
  • an attractive salary, depending on background and experience;
  • a good pension scheme and other fringe benefits.
