UNU Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH)
UNU-INWEH has been based in Canada since it was founded in 1996. Its core funding provided by the Government of Canada, and it is hosted at McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario.
UNU-INWEH is the 'United Nations Think Tank on Water'. It responds directly to the regional and global water crisis, and facilitates efforts to meet the MDGs. It is contributing to the design and subsequent implementation of development goals beyond the year 2015 by providing the evidence base. UNU-INWEH's mission is to contribute to efforts to resolve pressing regional and global water challenges that are of concern to the United Nations, its Member States, and their people, through targeted research, capacity development, knowledge enhancement, and transfer and public outreach.
UNU-INWEH's programme reflects a proactive, selective and longer-term strategy organized along two thematic lines: (a) Water & Human development; and (b) Water & Ecosystems. It has three core functions: (a) capacity development through the strengthening of scientific, managerial, educational and institutional capacity in developing countries; (b) enhancing and mobilizing knowledge to address policy issues and to fill critical knowledge gaps; and (c) directed science and policy bridging – achieved through application of research and focused on water policy and governance innovations.

Responsibilities
We are currently seeking a well-qualified and highly motivated Accounting Clerk to report to our Head of Programme Services and to assume the following responsibilities:
  • In accordance with UNU's policies and the United Nations Financial Rules and Regulation (UNFRR), provide a wide spectrum of clerical accounting services related to purchasing, accounts payable, payments, payroll, accounts receivable, billing, account reconciliations, monthly reporting, and year-end closing of accounts;
  • Contribute to initiatives to improve workflow and streamline financial processes to enhance efficiency and productivity;
  • In the absence of the Head of programme services, field all requests for programme services;
  • Maintain UNU-INWEH's vendor database of contractors and trade suppliers;
  • Maintain project files and general accounting and administration files;
  • Prepare departmental correspondence, standard contract documents, and routine general and project financial reports; and
  • Any other clerical and administrative duties as may be assigned or as required.
Required qualifications and experience
  • Minimum secondary school diploma with some continuing education in accounting or equivalent field of study;
  • At least two (2) years of relevant working experience, preferably in an international environment;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft word and excel and with a general accounting software package. Familiarity with PeopleSoft financial software is an asset;
  • Fluency in both oral and written English is required. Knowledge of other United Nations official languages is an asset;
  • Conscientious with excellent attention to detail;
  • Result-oriented and self-motivated with the ability to prioritize work and multi-task;
  • A good team player with strong interpersonal skills demonstrated by the ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
Remuneration
Remuneration will commensurate with qualification and experience. The position carries a salary in the range of CAD $28,000 to $36,000 per annum. The salary is exempt from Canadian income taxes.
Duration of contract
This is a full-time employment on a one (1) year Personnel Service Agreement (PSA) contract with UNU-INWEH, with the possibility for renewal subject to excellent work performance and availability of funds, with the combined duration of appointments not exceeding six (6) years.
This is a locally recruited position and no relocation allowance will be provided. The successful candidate will be employed under a local contract and will not hold international civil service status nor be a 'staff member' as defined in the UN Staff Rules and Regulations.
