Description
Roughly 2.7 billion people live on less than $2/day. In their communities, there is a huge gap between the education offered and the needs of the population. Too often the schools available to them fail. The quality offered is poor, teachers are unresponsive and occasionally abusive, and fees are expensive. Even “free” government schools can cost anywhere between $2 and $12 per month after all of the additional fees (some sanctioned, some not) are added up. 55% of families end up choosing private schools instead, but then fear for the stability and sustainability of their choice as many schools close after only a few years of service. Both the government schools and the private schools tend to lack well-conceived curriculum, student achievement data, and the capacity to react to that data.Families are actively searching for a better academic alternative.
Enter Bridge International Academies. As of January 2013, Bridge is operating more than 130 academies, serving roughly 50,000 pupils, in Kenya. Bridge is one of the fastest growing education enterprises in the world, with plans to open 100 new academies in Kenya alone in 2013 and to expand internationally thereafter.
The Academics Team
As of July 1, 2013, Bridge is launching a Boston-based Academics Team, with roughly fifteen superstars in curriculum, training, and measurement.

Curriculum Director, K-8 English
Overview:
We are looking for a fantastic English curriculum director – someone with proven success of driving big achievement gains for low-income students.
You will create some of the curriculum yourself; in other cases, you will direct development of scope and sequence, and then manage other curriculum writers to produce highly detailed and structured script templates aligned to daily objectives. You will also provide guidance on key instructional systems that need to be developed for teachers and Academy Managers to successfully leverage the scripts and instructional processes at their schools.
You'll be held accountable in part for teacher perception of the quality of curriculum, and in part based on gains in student learning.
It's easiest to describe who we've already hired:
Sean is math director. He taught in Teach For America, coached in the Match Teacher Residency, has worked in a high-poverty district on the intersection of coaching and curriculum.
Alex is early childhood director. He taught at KIPP, worked as a coach for TFA and then in strategy for their national office, and also has worked in a high-poverty district, mostly on the issue of English Language Learners.
Requirements:
It’s not enough that YOU can teach English well. You will need to be able to conceive and create curriculum so that a Kenyan teacher -- one with 50 students in an informal settlement or rural area, limited resources, and only a high school education -- can flourish. In this way, a successful candidate will be someone who thinks in terms of systems and support.
In addition, the English Curriculum Director must:
Be a self-starter who thinks three and four steps ahead.
Be hard working, with the tenacity to plow through challenges
Be results-oriented, driven by the data that will allow us to know what is working and what isn’t working for kids.
Be humble, seeking out feedback, internalizing it, and using it to get better.
The English Curriculum Director will be based in Boston, with some travel to Kenya and future Bridge expansion sites.
