The opportunity
 
We are looking for a Principal Advisor Employee Relations, based in Brisbane, to provide strategic employee relations support to the Rio Tinto business across the Australian region.
 
The Rio Tinto business covers a diverse portfolio of product groups including; Iron Ore, Diamonds & Minerals, Energy, Rio Tinto Alcan, and Copper. The Group Functions division provides specialist, centralised support to all major product groups and corporate areas within Rio Tinto. These services include; Technology & Innovation, Exploration, Health, Safety and Environment, Engineering, Information Systems & Technology, Procurement, Finance, Payroll, Recruitment and Human Resources. Group Functions operate across the globe in hub offices located in Brisbane, Perth, Salt Lake City, Montreal, Singapore, London and Johannesburg.

What the role entails
 
This position is a great opportunity for an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual seeking a new challenge. Reporting to the General Manager, you will be:
 
  • Working with the business to develop and implement employee relations strategies aligned with the Rio Tinto Global Framework that meet business or site needs
  • Providing business focused strategies, recognising legal obligations and mitigating employee relations risks
  • Advising senior leaders and Human Resource (HR) staff on the development of employee engagement initiatives and the requirements of the employee relations systems
  • Providing support to the Operational leaders at all levels to understand the strategy and work within the regional employee relations framework
  • Managing Rio Tinto’s relationship with external providers of employee relations legal support to ensure that support is provided in a timely and cost effective manner
  • Providing support to other team members in providing businesses in the region with employee relations support consistent with Rio Tinto’s regional employee relations direction and the business or  site need
  • Managing major employee relations litigation to address issues within the affected business and broader Rio Tinto exposures
  • Working with the senior business Operational and HR leaders to build employee relations capability across the business
  • Representing Rio Tinto in discussions with political representatives, Government bodies and industry
What you will need for this role
 
To succeed in this exciting and challenging role, you will have:  
  • A degree in Law, Employee Relations or  a related discipline
  • Extensive experience in managing employee relations issues in a large multi-national company, including providing advice and support on major restructuring or change processes
  • Experience in developing effective employee relations strategy and processes on a multi-site business
  • A strong business and commercial orientation with a bottom line focus and the ability to build robust business-focused relationships
  • Excellent written and verbal communication along with the ability to manage time effectively
  • Strong analytical and influencing skills
