Press Officer , Carbon Market Watch

Purpose of the position

Carbon Market Watch is seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Press Officer to develop and implement communication strategies for Carbon Market Watch’s campaigns. This is a new position based in Brussels to complement the existing Carbon Market Watch team. The Press Officer works independently but in close cooperation with the policy experts and will report to the Director.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Plan and implement innovative and effective media strategies in close cooperation with policy experts;
  • Develop effective narratives;
  • Research, write and distribute press releases;
  • Liaise with journalists and media on a wide range of subjects;
  • Prepare media coverage, speeches, articles and annual reports, newsletters;
  • Manage journalists contact database and enhance existing press contacts;
  • Utilise new and existing social media channels in line with media objectives;
  • Support website management;
  • Ensure effective documentation and media report back of events and campaigns (through video, audio, print).

Professional and personal attributes, abilities, and experiences

The ideal candidate should embody the following professional qualifications and personal attributes:

  • A strong commitment to environmental protection and human development;
  • Relevant university degree;
  • 3 years relevant communications experience in the advocacy sector;
  • Sound knowledge of European and international climate change policies, experience with carbon markets an asset;
  • Excellent imaginative, creative and accurate written and verbal communications skills in English, and experience of producing communications materials and resources;
  • Ability to effectively communicate and adapt to different audiences (political, technical, media…), reach out to stakeholders, and present to groups with confidence;
  • Analytical and critical thinking skills and proven experience of strategy development;
  • Campaigning experience desirable;
  • Fluent spoken and written English essential. Other languages considered an advantage;
  • Ability to work independently with good internal coordination skills;
  • Enthusiastic personality with cultural sensitivity.

Availability

We are looking for a candidate available to join our team as soon as possible in 2016. We will offer an initial contract for one year. Contract extension is dependent on the forthcoming availability of funds.
