ADVISOR, INTERGOVERNMENTAL SUPPORT

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the centre of all its efforts, UN Women (UNW) leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Deputy Executive Director (ASG) the Advisor will Support the Directorate in its interaction with the Inter Governmental Support Division (IGSD) especially in areas related to the development of a strong normative-operational link in the work of UN Women

  • Identify, develop and monitor a strategy for the Office of the Deputy Executive Director and the IGSD for strengthening attention to gender equality and women’s empowerment in sectoral policy making processes and in operational activities
  • Serve as the Focal Point in the Directorate for communicating, facilitating, receiving and undertaking a preliminary assessment of the relevance of contributions of inputs from other Divisions into UN Women outputs being coordinated by the Inter-Governmental, Coordination & Partnerships Bureau.
  • Work with the IGSD to develop identify, develop and implement a strategy to enhance attention to the Agreed Conclusions of Commission on Status of Women and other normative guidance provided by intergovernmental bodies to ensure the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of women
  • Advise the Deputy Executive Director in close collaboration with the Director of the IGSD on communication needs and opportunities both within and outside UN Women, and design and implement plans/activities to ensure optimal communication of the work of the Intergovernmental Support Division to other parts of UN women as well as to external audiences, including through the UN Women website, the UN Women Intranet, Newsletters and other forums
  • In close coordination with the Director of the IGSD, monitor sectoral intergovernmental processes (normative as well as operational processes), identify and propose priorities and strategies for UN-Women engagement
  • In close coordination with the Secretary of the Executive Board and the Executive Secretary of the Commission on the Status of Women, provide support in planning and organizing Executive Board sessions and the Commission on the Status of Women respectively, as well as substantive briefing sessions and related work, including preparing quality and timely documentation, briefings and reports. Ensure that Senior Management is well prepared for these events.
  • Organize and convene meetings with key stakeholders involved in sectoral normative and operational processes to share key priorities and action points for the promotion of gender equality and women’s empowerment, and the integration of gender perspectives in such processes. Liaise with Member States and other key stakeholders to ensure that UN Women priorities and positions are reflected in intergovernmental processes and outcomes.
  • Lead and undertake research and analysis for analytical reports on gender equality prepared by the Bureau and prepare issues papers and other materials to communicate the results of the work of the Bureau
  • Contribute to the development/expansion of knowledge management tools in regard to global normative and operational policy guidance on gender equality and women’s empowerment.
  • Work in collaboration with the Senior Advisor and Special Assistant to the Deputy Executive Director to ensure a smooth running of the Directorate.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Master degree (or equivalent) in gender issues, political affairs, international relations or social science or related fields.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in development, law, policy analysis, sociological/gender equality or related areas, including in the thematic area and in managerial leadership
  • Experience in UN intergovernmental processes, preferably with a focus on gender equality and women’s empowerment and knowledge of UN system gender architecture and strategic stakeholders/partners will be an asset.
  • Proven ability to organize and manage knowledge management processes and tools management experience is a requirement including proven strong people management skills and public speaking skills

Language Requirements:

  • Written and oral proficiency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN working language is desirable.
