Communications Officer IFOR's Women Peacemakers Program

Founded in 1919 in response to the horrors of war in Europe, the International Fellowship of Reconciliation (IFOR) has taken a consistent stance against war and preparations for war throughout its history. IFOR has developed into an international, faith-based movement of people who commit themselves to active nonviolence as a way of life and a means of transformation – personal, social, economic, and political. IFOR has branches, groups, and affiliates in more than 40 countries and on all continents.

In 1997, IFOR established the Women Peacemakers Program (WPP). The WPP works to support women's peacemaking initiatives and to highlight the importance of gender-sensitive peacebuilding. WPP is currently looking for a WPP Communications Officer (80%)

Location: IFOR International Secretariat, Alkmaar, the Netherlands

Commitment: Until December 2012, possibility of extension of contract

The WPP is looking for an experienced Communications Officer to join the team. The position entails collecting, analyzing, writing and disseminating relevant information related to gender-sensitive peacebuilding from and to a wide range of stakeholders, including activists, civil society organizations, INGOs, United Nations agencies, and governments. The Communications Officer will be the hub of all WPP communication, and will be responsible for:

• Revision and further development of WPP communication strategy 2012-2015 (including social media strategy).
• Co-ordination regular updates WPP website, Facebook, Twitter; communication with different WPP Google-groups.
• Developing PR materials for the WPP and spread them through the media.
• Coordination of, writing for, and editing of texts for WPP monthly e-letter Cross the Lines, the annual May 24 Pack, WPP activity reports, as well as articles upon request.
• Providing support (writing/ editing) to WPP staff responsible for activity reporting.
• Coordination of one public WPP event per year; coordination of WPP participation in joint public activities with partners.
• Responsible for managing daily information flow and (requests for) updates from the field and disseminating these further internally (team) and externally (partnership network).
• Co-responsible for representing the WPP (media, in national and international meetings, conferences, networks and working groups).
• Monitoring relevant developments in the WPS field in the Netherlands and internationally; and coordinating an effective WPP response.
• Overseeing cooperation with third parties, volunteers and interns responsible for communication tasks.
• Coordinating of WPP partnership database and email-lists.
• Creating tailored packages for targeted media in consultation with the International Coordinator and WPP Program Manager.
• Providing inputs on IFOR communication work in coordination with the International Coordinator, in the view of strengthening WPP as part of a broader platform.
• Other tasks upon request.


Profile
• Relevant education; with minimum of three years work experience and expertise.
• Demonstrated experience with (inter)national multi-stakeholder cooperation (government/ CSO representatives/ activists/ media), effective and strategic communicator.
• Excellent communication and writing skills in English and Dutch.
• Proven knowledge of and experience with social media (including campaigning).
• Independent worker, pro-active, accurate, flexible, able to make deadlines, good (team) communicator.
• Experience with managing websites and database (Acces) updates.
• Knowledge of the Women, Peace and Security sector
• Commitment to gender justice and nonviolent activism
