Internship at BDT- Special Initiatives Department

Organ:
The Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) is responsible for the organization and coordination of the work of the Telecommunication Development Sector of the Union (the Union has three functional sectors: Standardization, Radiocommunication and Development) which deals mainly with development policies, strategies, programming, as well as technical cooperation activities (expert missions, training programmes, field projects, seminars, etc.).
Organization Unit:
Within the Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) of the ITU and in close collaboration with the Deputy to the Director and the ITU Regional Offices, the Infrastructure, Enabling Environment and E-Applications Department (IEE) is responsible for assisting ITU Member States and ITU-D Sector Members with the utilization of appropriate technologies to build or extend their telecommunication infrastructure and adapt to the rapidly changing telecommunication/ICT environment. This includes the provision of guidelines and tools for the development of policy and regulatory frameworks, financing policies and strategies, development of telecommunication networks, the use of reliable and cost-effective ICT applications, cybersecurity, broadcasting and spectrum management. The Department is also responsible for promoting access to, as well as use and knowledge of, telecommunications and ICTs for groups which have been marginalized in their access to current mainstream information communications technology services, including women and girls, children and youth, indigenous people, persons with disabilities and people living in remote communities. The Department is also responsible for making contribution to and following-up the work of ITU-D Study Groups for issues related to the responsibilities of the Department.
Main Tasks and Responsibilities of the Internship
  • Maintain and make updates to the Special Initiatives (SIS) website and assure the successful delivery of IT solutions for the SIS website where necessary;
  • Re-organize the SIS website so the Events, Resources and Projects for all Special Initiatives populations are more visible from the homepage;
  • Administer the Connect a School and Connect a Community website;
  • Assist in development of SIS events, projects and activities;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications required
    Education:
    University degree in computer science or any technical related field; or in international relations, business administration, communications, public relations, economics, political science (with additional certification for web development).
    Experience:
    Experience in administration of projects or in organizing events will be an advantage.
    Languages:
    Excellent knowledge of English and good knowledge of French, Knowledge of an additional ITU official language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish) would be an advantage.
    Competencies:
  • Excellent knowledge in web development and administration;
  • Ability to use office automation tools and to create and update web content using tools such as Front Page;
  • Ability to administer content management systems (e.g. Drupal);
  • Full ICT literacy in Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, etc.;
  • High degree of initiative, motivation, availability and sense of responsibility;
  • Good communications and organization skills;
  • Additional Information:
    Please note that a non-remunerated Internship position at ITU does not carry the same "conditions of employment" as a Short Term or Fixed Term position. Mandatory medical insurance as well as accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of the Interns or sponsoring institutions, including travel expenses if any.
