Established in 1951, IOM is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. Context:

All translators are required to have a perfect command of their mother tongue and an excellent knowledge of at least the two other official languages. They must also be able to write in a clean, clear and perfectly grammatical style in Spanish. Under the supervision of the Senior Spanish Translator and Reviser the successful candidate will be accountable and responsible for providing translation services/ support covering a broad range of documents and subjects dealt with by the Organization.

Core functions/ responsibilities:

  1. Translate mainly from English, but also from French or other working languages, into Spanish a full range of documents, reports, formal texts, manuscripts, official correspondence, publications and other material. Produce accurate and complete versions in the target language using the most appropriate range of vocabulary and the commonly accepted or established equivalents of professional, scientific or technical concepts and terms.

  2. Edit texts in Spanish to ensure a style of presentation in conformity with IOM standards.

  3. Undertake research related to the texts in hand.

  4. Collect and verify terminology and references.

  5. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Technical

a) effectively applies knowledge of relevant languages to deliver accurate translations in accordance with defined requirements.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

a) completed advanced university degree from a recognized school of translation, or at least a four year first level degree in some other relevant field or an equivalent qualification from a university in which Spanish is the language of instruction; b) at least three years of professional translation experience (or five years for candidates with a first university degree) at international level. Having succeeded United Nations competitive examination an asset; c) good knowledge of the subject matter dealt with by the Organization; d) considerable knowledge and understanding of a particular substantive technical or administrative field; e) sound language translation skills and excellent drafting ability in Spanish; f) knowledge of and experience using word processing software, and ability to use computer based terminological and information tools.

Languages

Perfect command of Spanish (mother tongue) and an excellent knowledge of English and French. Working knowledge of other IOM/ UN official languages an advantage.

NOTES:

  1. Candidates will be assessed in a competitive framework in the occupational field, which will include an examination.

  2. The tenure of contract of staff members holding a regular contract will remain unchanged.
