Systems Administrator

General Description: The Systems Administrator (classified title: LAN Administrator) works in a team environment to provide quality customer service and support for information technology. The Systems Administrator is responsible for installing, maintaining, amd upgrading computers and peripherals, installing and upgrading software applications, assisting faculty, staff and students with computer issues, troubleshooting and resolving computer problems, maintaining software information systems and project calendars, documenting activity and solutions with our help desk and knowledgebase, and securing the LAN environment. The position will write how-to documentation and instructional guides, and offer formal classroom sessions and informal training. The position provides support for maintaining our computer labs, audio-visual classrooms, and video conference systems.

The primary duties and responsibilities of the job. The Systems Administrator will be responsible to provide the following services: • Desktop computer support – Install hardware and software, install peripherals such as printers and scanners, assist with classroom support, and help with set up of video conference sessions. Provide video capture support as needed. • Project Coordinaton – Assist with coordinating projects such as rollouts of new software, or delivery of new systems and workflow processes. Assist with decommissioning old systems and removing legacy products or services. • Asset management – Keep timely records of the computers and other technology assets that we manage. Maintain several systems and databases to help us manage our computer services. • Software purchasing – Manage the supply chain for software purchases. Collect purchase requests, route for approval, purchase software, and maintain records of our software licenses in the software database. Maintain a calendar of annual software license renewals, and insure that our software licenses are purchased and renewed in time for continuous delivery each year. • Calendar Management – Maintain several calendars to ensure timely delivery of IT services. This includes the AAP classroom schedule, the video conferencing schedule, the AAP-IT staff schedule, and other calendars used by IT to manage our operations. • Training – Create training guides for our faculty, staff, and students. Conduct formal and informal training sessions for our user community. • Web Tips and Updates – Provide web tips and help guides to our faculty, staff, and students. Develop a newsletter to promote IT services and enhance communication. Maintain our Confluence and SharePoint knowledgebases. The work shift is assigned to cover part of our day shift and the start of our evening classes. The scheduled work hours are 10:30am-7:00pm on Monday through Thursday, and 9:00am to 5:30pm on Friday. Occasional Saturdays or holidays may be required. Monthy travel to other JHU locations may also be required.

Qualifications: Minimum of two years college coursework. Minimum of two years related experience. Additional education may be substituted for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. Additional experience may be substituted for education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. Bachelor's degree and one year of experience is preferred.

Position requires a detail oriented person with a commitment to customer service and a proven ability to develop, document, and implement a stable Windows desktop environment. The LAN Administrator must possesses a strong background in information technology with experience providing desktop and application support, and the ability to learn and adapt to new technologies. Must possess the ability to handle multiple priorities; work independently; exercise independent judgment; and demonstrate excellent verbal and written communications skills. Position will be responsible to develop project timelines, meet deadlines, and work collaboratively as part of a team. The LAN Administrator also produces documentation and support guidelines for end-users and IT staff members. Demonstrated proficiency with MS Windows Active Directory, MS Windows XP or Windows 7, and MS Office is required.

Physical requirements for the job: Must be able to lift 40 lbs. Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard. Communication skills using the spoken word. Ability to see within normal parameters. Ability to hear within normal range Ability to move about. Ability to travel to other campuses.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.

Preferred Qualifications: Prior employment in an academic environment a plus. Strong skills with SharePoint, MS Access, or MS Excel are desired. Excellent communication skills are essential. Experience with writing training manuals and support guides preferred.
