Director, Research & Evaluation

General Description: This position is responsible for directing CTY’s Research and Evaluation Department. This is a professional and leadership position, with responsibilities for all research and evaluation activities within the Center for Talented Youth (CTY). The director is responsible for the development and implementation of an ambitious and relevant research agenda to promote the vision, fulfill the mission, and serve the strategic research needs of CTY. In addition to supervising and directing two Ph.D. research psychologists and one research assistant (who works part-time; usually a graduate student), the director works collaboratively with the research psychologists on specific research projects. The director works with departments across CTY to evaluate all programmatic initiatives and to assist such departments in developing their own evaluation agenda, instruments, and procedures. In addition, the director oversees direct evaluation efforts conducted and reported by the department for both internal CTY programs and evaluation initiatives that are provided externally on a contractual basis.

The primary duties and responsibilities of the job:
• Develop and implement an ambitious and relevant research agenda that addresses current and important issues within the field of gifted education and education in general, including the identification of highly able students, appropriate services and intervention to meet the needs of such students, the long-term development and outcomes for gifted students identified by CTY, and addresses highly debated issues such as creativity development, grouping, and the use of standardized tests.
• Work closely with the two research psychologists on staff to further the research agenda in a timely fashion, find grant opportunities, and write research grants. Monitor the research activities of the two research psychologists for quality of performance and quantity of effort.
• Ensure that research findings are appropriately disseminated through presentations at professional conferences and through publication in peer-reviewed research journals. This includes taking a leadership role in such presentations and publications.
• Develop resources for, and make presentations to, the education community and parent groups to inform such groups on CTY’s current research findings.
• Stay abreast of current research questions and findings in the field of gifted education, education generally, and psychology.

• Develop a CTY-wide evaluation agenda that will ensure that all programmatic activities across the organization are routinely and appropriately evaluated through evaluation projects directly carried out by research staff or through evaluation efforts developed collaboratively with individual departments.
• Monitor research staff in regard to evaluation services provided to outside agencies or organizations.
• Develop and manage the budget for the department, maintaining reasonable expenses and constantly being cognizant of sources for funding.
• Recruit, hire, and train new staff, as needed.
• Ensure that all research and evaluation activities (across the organization) are fully documented and archived in technical and evaluation reports, regardless of whether they are published in journals.
• Oversee the updating and publication of CTY’s Research Bibliography, both in print and on-line versions. Monitor the updating and appropriateness of the Research and Evaluation web pages.
• Serve as a resource to other CTY departments on research, statistical, and evaluation issues.

Qualifications: Education:
Ph.D. or Ed.D. required. Eight years related experience including significant post-doctoral experience taking the lead on large research projects that resulted in publications in peer-reviewed research or education journals. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required; must be able to direct, supervise, and work collaboratively with experienced research psychologists. Strong statistical, data analysis, and research design background and skills, including competence using such statistical packages as SPSS. Experience and demonstrated competence in the management of, and data-extraction process (e.g., facility using Access) from, large electronic databases.

Special skills and knowledge:
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required; must be able to direct, supervise, and work collaboratively with experienced research psychologists. Strong statistical, data analysis, and research design background and skills, including competence using such statistical packages as SPSS. Experience compiling summary statistics and research findings for annual reporting and presentation to a wide-range of audiences, including private funders and funding agencies is preferred. Experience in successful grant writing preferred.

Related work experience:
Experience and demonstrated competence in the management of, and data-extraction process (e.g., facility using Access) from, large electronic databases. Experience compiling summary statistics and research findings for annual reporting and presentation to a wide-range of audiences, including private funders and funding agencies is preferred. Experience in successful grant writing preferred.

Preferred Qualifications: Supervisory and personnel management experience strongly preferred.
