Deputy Head of Partnerships and Legal Services Advocates for International Development

The role of the Deputy Head of Partnerships and Legal Services is to coordinate the brokering of international pro bono opportunities by A4ID, bringing together legal experts and those working towards the Millennium Development Goals, ensuring all those who need legal advice can access it. In addition the Deputy Head of Partnerships and Legal Services helps development organisations to understand what their legal needs are and then put them in touch with the legal experts who can assist. The post holder is responsible for maintaining the project system in an efficient manner and for maintaining and developing relationships with Legal and Development Partners in relation to the pro bono broker service.
The Deputy Head of Partnerships and Legal Services reports to the Projects Officer (who manages A4ID’s Partnerships and Legal Services and develops its broker service strategically) and assists in supervising the pro bono projects interns.

Responsibilities

Coordination of A4ID’s Brokered Projects
- In agreement with the Projects Officer, scope A4ID’s weekly projects in conjunction with the source of the request and draft A4ID’s weekly project forms.
- Assist in circulating and allocating A4ID’s weekly projects.
- Draft and distribute project letters to Legal and Development Partners.
- Keep records and carry out regular progress reviews in relation to all allocated projects.
- Ensure that projects are conducted in an efficient matter so that the legal needs of Development Partners are met.
- Obtain and collate feedback from Development Partners and lawyers that have participated in A4ID projects.
- Assist in the preparation of reports and documentation where relevant to A4ID’s brokered projects.
- Assist in overseeing the administrative input to A4ID’s data systems to ensure all project related information is accurate and up to date.
- Work with other staff to provide descriptions of A4ID brokered projects for A4ID publicity materials, website and newsletters where appropriate.

Coordination of A4ID’s relationship with Development and Legal Partners
- Maintain and develop existing partnerships with legal and development organisations, under the leadership of the Projects Officer.
- Carry out due diligence on potential new Development Partners.
- Carry out due diligence on potential new Legal Partners.
- Assist in communicating with potential Development and Legal Partners.
- Present to A4ID Development and Legal Partners to promote A4ID’s work, under the leadership of the Projects Officer.
- Carry out other tasks as and when required by the CEO.

Person specification

Skills and experience

Essential:
- Law degree and qualification as a lawyer (in any jurisdiction)
- Experience in legal practice
- Experience of working in an office environment, including familiarity with Word, Excel
- Ability to manage interns/volunteers
- Ability to represent an organisation to external contacts
- Confident and self-motivated
- Excellent communication skills, with a friendly, positive attitude
- Tact and discretion, with the confidence to deal with people from a range of backgrounds in writing, on the telephone and face to face
- Flexibility to undertake a range of tasks, and occasionally outside office hours
- The capacity and flexibility to manage a varied workload
- Ability to work as part of a team as well as own initiative
- Very accurate, methodical and ordered approach to work
- Proven ability to work to tight deadlines and within agreed frameworks
- Enthusiastic and committed to the objectives of international development and ethos of the international development sector
- Flawless written and spoken English
- Willingness to take on high level and mundane tasks and perform both with excellence

Desirable
- Experience of managing staff/volunteers
- Experience of representing an organisation to external contacts
- Fluency in French (also useful, but less valuable than French: Spanish, Russian, Mandarin, Arabic)
- Experience in a development organisation or in developing countries
- Ability to touch type

Salary: £25,000-£28,000
