Ventilation and Occupational Hygienist

Cullinan Diamond Mine, part of Petra Diamonds, is situated in the town of Cullinan, 30km east of Pretoria. The Mine is currently mining at a depth of 747 metres, using mechanised trackless block-cave mining.

Ventilation and Occupational Hygienist

The incumbent will organise routine ventilation and occupational hygiene observations, study the results, visit problem areas and undertake special projects as and when required.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Perform routine measurements pertaining to the ventilation standards and regulations
  • Ensure operational control of the Occupational Health Centre
  • Carry out general atmosphere and underground water sampling tests, and air quality surveys
  • Perform quarterly checks on underground fire-fighting equipment and interpret results and make recommendations
  • Update the emergency plans as required by law
  • Draw up layouts on auxiliary ventilation changeovers
  • Be responsible for calibration of measuring instruments
  • Manage and control subordinates
  • Maintain and enforce the Mine’s Codes of Practice, standards, procedures and report any observations of this not being done
  • Ensure personal and co-workers’ adherence to and compliance with security and the Company’s SHE objectives
  • Oversee the medical surveillance programme
  • Review/revise the Code of Practices’ long- and short-term planning with regard to ventilation.

Requirements:

  • A Grade 12 with Maths and Science
  • A Certificate in Mine Environmental Control (Advanced)
  • A minimum of 2 years’ relevant underground experience
  • Computer literacy and working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the Windows System
  • Independence, self-starting, proactive thinking and the ability to do own job planning
  • Good verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills in English
  • Demonstrated participation in cost-saving initiatives and adherence to procedures and Codes of Practice (COPs).
