Safety Superintendent - Buzwagi Gold Mine

POSITION OBJECTIVE
KEY RESULT AREAS and FUNCTIONS
Ø Develop and communicate the Annual Safety Management Plan and advise the
Ø Develop budgets to ensure Safety objectives can be met
Ø Implementing and auditing a Health and Safety program which includes:
Ø Identifying the hazards to health and safety to which employees may be exposed and by assessing the risk implement the necessary controls/training to ensure that the risk is eliminated / managed. This includes all mine production areas, support services, maintenance workshops, process plant, and new civil construction projects.
Ø Periodical review of the major hazards identified and risks assessed including occupational hygiene measurements, to determine whether further measures are required to manage the risk.
Ø To consult with legislative bodies, assist National advisory bodies, and get the different agencies to come to site for Audits.
Ø Ensure that detailed accident investigations are conducted and that the appropriate remedial actions are instituted in compliance with statutory legislation. Co-ordinate the facilitation of, and participate in, TapRoot investigations as required to ensure that a high quality of investigation and outcomes is achieved.
Ø Ensure the courageous leadership and visible leadership programs are implemented and maintained
Ø Ensure ER capability for major risks on the mine site
Ø Ensure that adequate health and safety training has been given and that all employees are competent to perform their assigned duties. To conduct regular audits of :-
Ø Training given to employees
Ø Hazard identification systems and training on identified risks
Ø Systems of enforcement
Ø Continue with the introduction and training on the Barrick HSE systems
Ø Advise line managers on best practice H&S
Ø Manage and develop section OH&S staff and produce development plans for key successional positions
Ø Ensure monthly report and Safety KPI’s are correct and reported in a timely manner to meet Barrick’s requirements.
Ø Design, implement and monitor effective safety programs/systems using own initiative and knowledge.
Ø Keep abreast of any new methods, trends and technological developments pertaining to safety, and upgrade current systems/programs used on the mine.
Ø Advise Management, Supervisors and Health and Safety Committees on the development and implementation of the various aspects of safety programs / systems and any other matters pertaining to the health and safety of workers.
Ø Conduct studies and projects aimed at reducing risks or losses.
Ø Assist the Trainers with the design of training programs to ensure an appropriate and effective safety component.
Ø Present safety training programs to the workforce and management.
Ø Conduct appropriate on –the- job training and coaching and give guidance, during visits to all working areas of NorthMara.
Ø Identify safety and training needs during work area visits using own training knowledge, and advise on the upgrading of training programs and courses to ensure that all employees are properly trained to perform their tasks in a safe and efficient manner.
Ø Monitor and follow up on all safety related issues, to ensure agreed action is completed.
Ø Include an emergency evacuation strategy of the refinery in the Crisis Emergency response Plan.
Ø The emergency evacuation plan is to be revised when changes are made to the gold room and or annually. Provides training to all employees/ contractors on the correct usage of fire hydrants, hoses and extinguishers.
Ø Inspects and insures the safe aircraft movement during landing and takeoff following established safety procedures.
Ø Conduct traffic speed testing and driver compliance to BUZWAGI traffic rules.
Ø Fills and maintains breathing apparatus (SCBA) cylinders according to established procedures.
Ø Undertakes routine maintenance of specialised rescue equipment i.e. cutting/spreading equipment, hydraulic pump and air compressor when required.
Ø Conducts fire tender, fire trailer and hazchem trailer safety checks and informs the S & H Co-ordinator of any deviations.
Ø Advises employee dependants on home safety, road safety and fire awareness on an ad hoc basis as instructed.
Ø Performs standby duties / instructions as stipulated by S & H manager.
Ø Council employees in the event of transgressions of established safety rules and regulations.
Ø Attends all Emergency Response Team practices and call-outs.
Ø Undertakes routine maintenance of all fire extinguishing equipment i.e. fire hydrants, hoses and fire extinguishers.
Ø Record monthly safety statistics.
Ø Implement safety competitions.
Ø Include an emergency evacuation strategy of the refinery in the Crisis Emergency response Plan.
Ø The emergency evacuation plan is to be revised when changes are made to the gold room and or annually.
Ø Assists the S & H Co-ordinator with any necessary tasks that may arise from time to time in coherence with S & H procedures.
Ø Responsible to report fatigue to supervisor

PROFESSIONAL AND INTERPERSONAL DETAILS
Education: Degree/Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Management
Experience: Minimum of 5 years industry/ mining experience (Open Pit) with at least minimum of 2 years in a leadership/supervisory position.
Previous experience working in a remote location is essential with African experience being highly desirable.
