Forest Campaigner Greenpeace Africa Gauteng, South Africa

OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB
As a member of the Programme Team, the job purpose is to participate in the planning and execution of campaign project work in order to achieve the objectives of Greenpeace Africa, as detailed in the annual Organizational Development Plan (ODP), currently focused on promoting forest protection in the Congo Basin, preventing fisheries exploitation in West Africa, and developing an energy revolution in South Africa to fight climate change. In the first years the job will be primarily focused on developing and further establishing the Greenpeace forest campaign in Central Africa. This includes:

• Effective engagement with key stakeholders, including from government, business, media civil society
• Effective coordination of campaign network
• Political lobbying and media work
• Research
• Strategy development and campaign project implementation

MAIN AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

• Contribute to the development and implementation of GPAf’s campaign strategies, projects and campaign work with a focus on forests in Congo Basin.
• Participate in and contribute to the proposals and assessments of the annual Campaign Programme as required.
• Assist in the (strategic) development of the social, economic, political, legislative and business components of the campaigns in order to ensure that Greenpeace Africa can respond effectively to strategic opportunities, and influence the development of relevant national and international legislation and practices.

• Undertake specific campaign project work. Project work is likely to involve all or some of the following techniques: non-violent direct action, public communication and engagement activities, media work, political and corporate work and the use of legal and scientific approaches to issues.

• Monitor external political, scientific, communications and technical development related to the campaigns; provide briefings and draft campaign communications as required;
• Ensure regular communications and reporting with GPAf, GPI and other NROs;
• Maintain an active network with GPI, NROs, and potential and established allied groups and coalition partners;
• Represent GPAf in national, regional and international meetings and conferences as required;
• Research and investigate developments in the forest and palm oil sector
• Assume any other responsibility appropriate to the role, as directed by the Campaigns Manager.
COMMUNICATIONS & REPRESENTATION

• Establish and/or support communication and ensure collaboration with local authorities, UN, NGOs, partners, community leaders and all other important stakeholders. Represent Greenpeace at meetings, coordination bodies, stakeholders and local communities.
• Develop, build alliances, and maintain good relationships with other NGOs, and other relevant groups.
• Prepare substantive briefings and updates to inform staff, media and stakeholders on specific campaign issues, progress and outcomes.
• In conjunction with the GP Africa communications team, design, create and use a range of communications tools (direct actions, direct communication, traditional and new media, briefing sheets and public information, and other tools) to communicate with target audiences and to achieve campaign objectives.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor degree or relevant experience
• Minimum of 3 years work experience with NGOs
• Minimum of 3 years work experience in campaigning and advocacy
• Good Knowledge of the forest or agricultural sectors in Africa, in particular the Congo Basin
• Expertise in forest and/or agricultural policies in Congo Basin countries
• Understanding of the importance of the role of communications in campaigning
• Proven Ability to analyze environmental issues in terms of campaign opportunities and in terms of overall strategic objectives
• Proven ability to conduct high level research and documentation
• Ability to be innovative and imaginative in solving problems arising out of campaigns
• Ability and willingness to travel frequently both on the continent and beyond
• Ability and willingness to work in an international, multi-cultural and dynamic team.
