Assistant Executive Director, Partnership and Governance Services in Italy


The World Food Programme (WFP) is the United Nations frontline humanitarian agency addressing hunger and malnutrition worldwide.  The Assistant Executive Director, Partnership and Governance Services will provide strategic guidance and ensure timely and effective support to WFP’s extensive partnership and governance activities through the Partnership and Governance Services Department.  The post carries the grade of Assistant Secretary General and is located at WFP’s global headquarters in Rome, Italy.  Reporting to the Executive Director, the AED Partnership and Governance Services, as part of WFP’s top management team, will be responsible for:
  • Providing strategic leadership and guidance to the Partnership and Governance Services Department setting direction at corporate level to ensure management effectiveness, strong partnerships, effective and productive government and private donor relationships and secure and diverse funding bases to meet the diverse and ever-changing needs and challenges of WFP’s operating environment;
  • Guiding and directing the divisions and offices responsible for interagency, multilateral, government and private sector partnerships, Executive Board relations and WFP matters within the Committee on World Food Security (CFS);
  • Building and nurturing partnerships within the UN and with other international, non-governmental and governmental organizations;
  • Driving a performance culture across WFP, seeking continual improvements particularly in partnerships and resource mobilization at headquarter, regional and country level;
  • Setting priorities and providing a clear narrative of what is important and guiding the implementation of corporate initiatives at the headquarter, regional and country office levels;
  • Communicating tough messages with clarity and empathy;
  • Encouraging a focus on outputs, outcomes and results whilst encouraging innovation;
  • Promoting the use of evidence in decision making;
  • Assessing corporate risks;
  • Support the development and implementation of the Executive Director’s strategic objectives and contributing towards enhancing WFP’s relevance and impact;
  • Performing other duties as required.
 Essential Requirements:
  • Appropriate university degree;
  • Proven track record (at least 15 years) of senior level progressively responsible professional experience in building and maintaining corporate partnerships;
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver change and results in politically and operationally sensitive contexts;
  • Outstanding leadership, strategic visioning, management, communication, negotiating, team-building and partnership skills demonstrated in overseeing a large and diverse organization;
  • Knowledge of WFP’s business context including the delivery of large-scale humanitarian and/or development operations;
  • Strong networking and relationship building skills, evidenced by an extensive network of contacts with key players and stakeholders at the international level;
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills to work effectively in a multicultural environment;
  • High commitment to the values and guiding principles of WFP;
  • Excellent capacity in English and working knowledge of at least one other WFP working language (Arabic, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese or Portuguese).
