French, German or Spanish Campaigner

This position is part of our drive to globalise our organisation. We want to move into more languages and build additional meaningful relationships in non-English-speaking countries.

This is a start-up environment (we’re only two years old!), so you’re going to be doing everything from writing and editing emails to campaign strategy to getting banners printed at 10:30pm at the only open print shop in Johannesburg the night before a stunt.

But if you've got ideas for how to take on multinational corporations with a few thousand dollars, a Twitter account and a gorilla suit; if you know how to find a company’s financial and PR weak spots and get inside the CEO’s head; if you’re deeply frustrated with corporate control over our governments; if you want a chance to be part of something world-changing – you could be the perfect candidate.

Here are some things you’ll be doing:

  • Research possible campaigns targeting corporations operating around the globe;
  • Write action email alerts in (and translate emails from English into) at least one other major language (German, French, Spanish);
  • Coordinate with partners around the globe;
  • Develop and implement strategic tactics to win campaigns;
  • Support other campaigners;
  • Other roles, as needed.

We need someone who:

  • Speaks and writes English well enough to be able to function efficiently in an English-speaking work environment;
  • Has strong campaigning and organizing instincts; can spot a compelling or winnable campaign a mile away and knows what it takes to motivate people to take action;
  • Is an excellent/native-level writer and communicator at least one of German, French, or Spanish (CEFR level C2);
  • Is a top-notch project manager, and can juggle many projects at once without ever dropping something critical;
  • Can work effectively in a virtual office with a diverse and geographically dispersed team;
  • Has access to reliable high-speed internet;
  • Is comfortable with new technology and social media - can easily pick up and learn new technologies, from project management tools to Google Analytics;
  • Is dedicated to building a fairer and more sustainable global economy.

Big pluses include:

  • Has proficiency of at least one more language of French, German, or Spanish (at least CEFR level B2);
  • Able to write and communicate professionally in additional languages besides the required ones (English + one of French, Spanish, or German);
  • Deep experience with social media or digital communications -- you’ve built a large Twitter following, used the internet to build publicity for a 10,000-person political rally, or something of the sort;
  • Familiarity with the MoveOn/Avaaz/38 Degrees/GetUp model of rapid-response email organizing;
  • Experience with corporate campaigning or corporate accountability issues;
  • Experience working for a large corporation, especially working closely with decision-makers at multinational corporations in a business/PR/CSR context;
  • Experience working in or closely with the labour movement or socially responsible investing community;
  • Experience living or working in multiple regions of the world;
  • Deep understanding of the operations, structures, regulations, and incentives within a key industry or corporate sector -- mining, finance, agriculture, etc.;
  • Extensive network of community organizations, non-profits, and advocacy groups and a political understanding of key world regions -- especially Western Europe, Canada, and/or Latin America;
  • Tech & design skills (eg, CSS, SQL, video editing) and/or the ability to manage developers;
  • Media pitching experience and/or relationships with political or business journalists (especially in Europe and North America);
  • Familiarity with corporate, libel, human rights, intellectual property, labor, and/or international law;
  • Ability to travel internationally on a fairly regular basis;
  • Is based in a timezone that allows for easy engagement with US-based partner groups and SumOfUs staff - preferably between Central Europe and Alaskan time zones.

We may be hiring more than one candidate for this position before February 2013 - we would like to hire personnel who collectively can cover all three of German, French, and Spanish with native-level speakers by then. We’ll be accepting applications on a rolling basis until the position(s) are filled - as long as this job post is still up at on RecruiterBox, we are still accepting applicants ut we are ideally looking to make at least one offer by early-to-mid-December, so get your application in now!

Please use the form below to send a resume or CV in English. Instead of writing a traditional cover letter, answer these four questions in English (no novels! Keep it concise):
  • Why are you applying for this job? (Suggested word limit: 125);
  • Name 2 campaigns you think SumOfUs should be running (Suggested word limit: 75 words each). Make sure you include the target of the campaign (who are we asking to do something?) and the ask (what are we asking them to do?). You can see some recent examples of the types of campaigns we run here:http://sumofus.org/campaigns/;
  • List which of the “BIG PLUS” qualifications above you believe you bring to the table (no need to elaborate; just list them);
  • Tell us which languages you speak, and how fluent you are in them. You may use the CEFR scale for this if you'd prefer.
If you have questions about this or other jobs, please feel free to email us at jobs@sumofus.org.

We have no formal education requirements – if you can do and grow with the job, that’s all that matters. We are flexible on exact qualifications, but we expect to hire someone for this position with between 1 and 8 years of professional experience, and the successful candidate is likely to have at least some volunteer or professional experience in some form of campaigning, organizing or advocacy work.

Compensation is competitive (we believe in fairly compensating employees!) and will be determined based on a combination of experience, seniority, and the country you live in. (For some context: This position in a major US city would pay in the range of USD$35-50,000 depending on experience and seniority; the compensation level will be adjusted in other countries based on cost of living and the payscale for similar jobs in the NGO sector.) We offer significant benefits, including five weeks paid vacation (plus additional sick leave and all major holidays off), and the ability to work from home and set your own hours. We cover 100% of a private health insurance premium for employees who live in countries without public health insurance. As a start-up, we are still establishing policies around employee benefits -- in particular, around time off for professional development, maternity/paternity leave, retirement matching, and others. Bottom line: You can be assured we treat our employees fairly, if only because we campaign against corporations that don’t.

This position will report to a Campaign Manager.
