IDLO seeks candidates for the position of Legal Aid Mentor based in Kabul for a U.S. funded, multimillion dollar program supporting the National Justice Sector Strategy (NJSS program). This a full time position with a duration of 3 - 6 months.
Under the supervision of the Chief of Party in Kabul, the Legal Aid Mentor will be responsible for:
  • Enhancing the capacity of legal aid service delivery in Afghanistan in collaboration with legal aid partners;
  • Supervising and conducting training for legal aid staff to adequately represent and advocate for the rights of all Afghans, with special attention to vulnerable populations;
  • Strengthening the institutional capacity and sustainability of our legal aid partners;
  • Providing input into the public legal awareness program component on key legal issues and the availability of legal aid services;
  • Supervising and mentoring Afghan legal aid professionals;
  • Maintaining solid relationships with partner institutions through regular meetings and reporting;
  • Preparing a monitoring plan for the outputs relevant to legal aid;
  • Providing timely weekly reports to the Chief of Party in accordance with IDLO procedures;
  • Supporting legal aid partners in compiling monthly reports;
  • In cooperation with the Finance and Administration Department, preparing financial forecasts for the legal aid outputs as well as monitoring program expenditure; and
  • Attending working groups and coordination committees, as directed by the Chief of Party.
IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE
  • IDLO seeks a Legal Aid Mentor, who has extensive rule of law experience in development programs, a genuine interest and passion for the organization’s mission to ensure the successful implementation of a justice sector reform project aimed at handing capacity to Afghan institutions;
  • The Legal Aid Mentor will have a proven track records in this area. She/he will need to bring enthusiasm, a dependable attitude, the ability to mentor staff when required, and have the flexibility to participate in a wide variety of tasks. Sensitivity to political, cultural and religious issues surrounding Afghanistan is essential to the success of this position;
  • The Legal Aid Mentor will have the knowledge and strong interpersonal skills to interact effectively with a multi–cultural team and foster relationships based on mutual respect and trust.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
  • The Legal Aid Mentor will possess a law degree, preferably at an advanced level, and have a minimum of 7 years legal experience. Prior experience in development organizations is a significant advantage;
  • Experience in Afghanistan is a requirement for the consultancy. The candidate must have the emotional strength and be willing and able to work in a difficult environment;
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required. Knowledge of Dari/Pashtu would be a significant advantage.
