The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) is a joint venture of Rio Tinto (58.7 per cent), Mitsubishi (26.2 per cent) and the Labrador Iron Ore Royalty Income Fund (15.1 per cent). Managed by the Rio Tinto Iron Ore group, IOC is Canada’s largest iron ore pellet producer, maintaining an open pit mine, a concentrator and iron ore pellet making plant at Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as a 418 kilometer railway and port facilities at Sept Îles, Quebec, on the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The opportunity
We are currently looking for a Principal Advisor - Safety, residentially based in Labrador City, to assist us in delivering our goal of zero injuries.
What the role entails
Reporting to the Manager - HSE Governance, you will be responsible for:
- Providing technical support whilst developing and implementing systems and programs to improve safety performance
- Advising Management on significant safety risks and identifying controls to mitigate these risks
- Supporting the operational HSE Superintendents to ensure consistent application of Rio Tinto’s Safety Standards
- Assisting Management in conducting investigations of accidents or incidents (including root cause analysis evaluations)
- Auditing the facility’s systems for compliance against established standards and regulatory requirements
- Directing or assisting in the development and delivery of safety training materials and programs
- Assisting in the formulation of lessons learned from incidents and accidents, and participating in accident review panels
- Coordinating work associated with relevant legal requirements and the preparation of the annual safety improvement plan
What you will need for this role
To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH)
- 10 years’ experience in Safety, or a related field, with demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of safety related training programs
- Knowledge of Federal and Provincial safety requirements for Occupational Safety and Health (OSH)
Prior experience in a large multinational company, excellent written and verbal communications skills will be considered as assets.
