Position Description

The School of Public Policy (SPP) at Central European University seeks a Web Editor. SPP was launched in August 2011 and publicly inaugurated in April 2012. In the words of its founder, George Soros, the school aspires to be “a new kind of global institution dealing with global problems.” Instead of wishing away the current global environment of uncertainty, complexity and continuous change, SPP will embrace it in order to make a real, lasting impact.
The Web Editor will help shape this major new academic institution, which strives to foster academic excellence, educate political and social entrepreneurs, and improve policymaking that addresses the critical challenges of our time. The Web Editor will help promote the work of SPP and its affiliated centers, by increasing public relations and awareness, inter alia through its website. The Wed Editor will work with the Dean’s Office and report to the SPP’s Dean.
The establishment of SPP represents the opportunity for those involved to develop a vital and unique institution with an entrepreneurial and exploratory spirit within a university that is committed to promoting the values of open society, democracy and critical, reflective thinking.
The initial contract is for 2 years with a possibility of renewal.

Tasks and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will perform the following duties:
  • Maintain and continuously improve the website(s) of SPP and units affiliated with it, including by posting new content, regularly updating all relevant pages, and setting up ‘mini’ websites for major events;
  • Monitor and update materials on social media sites used by SPP; promote the School and its activities via social media;
  • Perform research to supplement available information, based on input from SPP staff and faculty; draft and edit texts and compile information for the SPP website;
  • Collaborate with CEU Communications Unit and/or sub-contractors (whenever appropriate) to produce videos of SPP courses and make them available on social media sites; select and upload photographs for the website;
  • Edit and proofread English-language SPP reports and publications;
  • Advise SPP staff and faculty on content, format, and posting processes, and ensure that presentation of material is consistent with university-wide and SPP-wide visual identity guidelines;
  • Maintain regular contact with the CEU web team to ensure consistency with the overall CEU web operations.

Specific qualifications

  • First-level university degree. A degree or certificate in web design, web editing, or other relevant field would be an asset;
  • Previous professional experience, preferably in the field of website and/or publications editing or online learning;
  • Proven editing skills and familiarity with all major computer applications;
  • Advanced literacy in digital technology and knowledge of social media software;
  • Experience in the area of the production of basic audio-visual materials is desirable;
  • Experience in a university or international organization is desirable.

General qualifications

  • Ability to identify and propose solutions;
  • Excellent knowledge of English and the ability to draft and summarize texts exemplifying a native or near native-level;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people of different national and cultural backgrounds;
  • Gender awareness and sensitivity, and an ability to integrate a gender perspective into tasks and activities;
  • Attention to detail and ability to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
