Senior Public Health Coordinator

GOAL currently implements an integrated primary health care programme supporting the Ministry of Health based out of 47 health facilities across three locations (Twic County, Abyei and Ulang and Baliet Counties of Upper Nile State). The programme has a focus on supporting capacity of the South Sudanese Ministry of Health (MoH) in these locations to provide health services as well as an emergency response function to asses and respond to population displacement and outbreaks of disease as required. GOALs overall approach is to reduce child and maternal mortality and improve population health across its programmes areas of South Sudan. In the health programme GOAL works to increase MoH capacity to deliver services through technical, and management support to the County Health Departments (CHDs) across these four counties. GOAL currently supports a comprehensive primary health care programme which includes; curative care, community health with a focus on behaviour change, reproductive health and immunisation. GOAL also integrates curative nutrition services within the health facilities via an outpatient therapeutic programme (OTPs) as well as a community nutrition programme that aims to address the underlying causes of malnutrition in these communities.
All of GOALs programme locations have been affected by the on-going conflict in South Sudan and as a result GOAL is also working to ensure that the specific health needs of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) are being addressed in the programme. This component of the programme is still developing as the situation evolves however a key element involves being responsive to changing needs of the population with a particular focus on disease surveillance and provision of mobile health and nutrition services to affected populations.
GOAL integrates awareness of HIV and gender across all its health activities and recognises that women and girls are more likely to be vulnerable to HIV and that they also face specific health problems which relate to their gender which need to be specifically addressed in the programme. GOAL builds community acceptance through local structures of Community Health Committees that are formed and trained on their roles in health service provisions through CHDs of the counties GOAL operates in. GOAL implements a complementary WASH programme of borehole drilling, rehabilitation of existing water points, training community members in hand pump repair, support to Rural Water Departments and sanitation. Health and hygiene promotion is also a major part of GOAL WASH and Community Health programmes to address. Additionally, GOAL implements livelihoods programmes, primarily support to agricultural activities along with adult informal education.
