Position Summary

The purpose of this position is to manage the Operational activities conventional and dynamically positioned oil tankers on behalf of BG Global Shipping.

The role further exists to ensure compliance with BG policies and procedures, applicable laws and industry guidelines and to achieve a safe, economic oil operation whilst minimizing environmental impact.

The position is a key enabler for BG’s Oil Trading group providing the primary communications link with the vessel’s Master in order to direct, monitor and continuously seek to improve the operational efficiency and onboard performance of the post fixture contract execution of each vessel’s voyage.
The role has a material HSSE aspect in terms of identifying hazards and risks that may have the potential to impact the vessel’s voyage and operations in port whilst seeking opportunities to improve efficiency and rationalize ship movements in optimizing BG’s cargo schedule.

The position provides first line assistance to the Compatibility Superintendent with regard to all aspects of vessel’s ship to ship compatibility and vessel clearance, and provides front line support to the business concerning all aspects of cargo measurement, quality and control in conjunction with the Loss Control Manager and Superintendent who are the company’s Subject Matter Experts.

Key Accountabilities

Manage the operational and safety aspects of BG’s Chartered vessels to gain the maximum efficiency and availability. 
Prepare operational reports as required to all interested parties within BG on operational and technical aspects of assigned fleet vessels.
Lead vessel performance, movement, cargo and cargo transfer operations, and other marine related activities in conjunction with the with the Voyage Operators.
Responsible for ensuring that controlled shipping comply with all regulatory, safety and environmental standards.
Promote a positive safety culture by active participation in development, implementation and enforcement of safety procedures to ensure high safety standards.
Develop technical and operational competencies of the Brazil regional team through competence gap analysis and training.
Develop existing strategies and implement new ones for controlling shipping risk on managed tonnage.
Manage fleet performance, introducing new technology and practices to improve performance.
Lead commercial awareness to owned and controlled vessel staff and managers by building relationships that include extensive dialogue to develop in others a deep understanding of BG’s business priorities.
Provide leadership and direction to continuous improvement initiatives in support of improving the efficiency of all aspects of the commercial operations for the voyage and port operations including but not limited to port fees, bunker procurement.
Provide leadership, to internal and external parties, during repair and dry-docking programs and delivery and re-delivery program to ensure optimized fleet availability.
Manage the Oil team in identifying hazards and risks within the shipping operations group while seeking opportunities to improve efficiency and rationalize ship movements in support of BG’s activities.
Assist and advise the Director of Marine Operations as directed on an Operational and Project basis Manage selective Contractor Management Plan(s) in line with BG standards Monitor the Incident Management Duty phone on assigned weeks.

Unique Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Attribute

Experience Needed:
STCW 95 Class One, Deck or Engine CoC, as minimum, or equivalent. Marine experience should have sailed in a senior officer capacity at sea, preferably on DP Shuttle Tankers and hold a DP Operators License. Previous shore side experience as a Operations or Technical. Superintendent for vessels desirable. Ability to learn quickly and be able to adapt in a rapidly changing situation. An ability to openly communicate with a broad stakeholder network whilst maintaining focus on task and deadlines. Must demonstrate tact and diplomacy and demonstrate a high degree of cross-cultural awareness.
 
Knowledge, Languages, Skills and Attributes:
The job holder should have either a Class 1 Deck or Engineer CoC with relevant Oil experience or hold a maritime degree. Experience with Oil marine operations and a working knowledge of Oil Terminals and Ship to Ship Operations. An ability to independently manage tasks and problems in a fast paced and dynamic environment, often resulting in after hours work. Sound leadership capabilities and the ability to work independently. Key relationship and stakeholder management skills. The job holder must be articulate, good communicator, and be able to demonstrate effective organizational skills. Must possess financial and administrative qualities as well as strong computer skills.
 
Special Features:
Occasional travel may be required to visit vessels and/or to facilitate or undergo training and development opportunities.
Primary working environment is an office setting, with occasional travel and vessel visits.
