Communications Manager Greenpeace

Greenpeace International is looking for an outstanding Communications Manager to help lead the global communications strategy for our Climate & Energy campaign. Purpose of the job
To lead, develop and implement communication strategies and creative concepts for campaign projects as well as fundraising activities, in line with the identity guidelines and in cooperation with the communications team, in order to raise organizational and campaign awareness in the public and to ensure the delivery of agreed campaign strategies in alignment with the Organisational Strategy.

Key responsibilities

  • Maintain an overview of key external developments and based on this formulate and deliver effective communication strategies and activities, in cooperation with the Head of Campaign Communications, ensuring the provision of ongoing advice to senior management at GPI and in NROs on the formulation and execution of GP’s strategic direction and communication design
  • Lead and coordinate the formulation, development, agreement and implementation of global innovative, creative, pro-active and reactive campaign communication strategies and objectives for communication issues, in the context of the Greenpeace mission and identity guidelines with the Head of Campaign Communications, in order to clearly define the objectives of global campaigns communication
  • Functionally leads and manages members of the Greenpeace International communications staff working on communication programs, in line with HR and GPI guidelines, in order to be equipped for current and future challenges and contribute to the realization of the unit’s objectives
  • Develop, monitor and authorize expenditure of communication strategies within her/his responsibility, according to agreed objectives and the priorities to ensure cost effectiveness and strategic expenditure of the allocated budget
  • Enable the communication unit to build relationships with and support NROs through consistent communication, diplomacy and NRO visits, in cooperation with the unit team and in the context of organisational development plans
  • Maintain overview and coordinate the development of external international networks with key allies, political fora, industry, NGOs, public and media in order to enable maximum influence in external world to support achievement of communication strategies and objectives
  • Ensure all communication material produced by GPI and NROs is in adherence to editorial policies and in line with the identity guidelines across all platform, concerning the own communication projects, in order to ensure consistency in communication content and presentation style
  • Advise and assist the Head of Campaign Communications and Fundraising Unit on the development of funding proposals for major donors and foundations, and subsequent campaign reporting and representation, liaising with major donors, Foundations and other supporters of Greenpeace work as required in order to ensure funding proposals are factually correct and in line with the agreed global campaign strategy.

Skills and qualifications

  • Bachelors/Masters degree or equivalent
  • At least 5 years professional experience in Communications
  • Good working knowledge of climate & energy issues would be an advantage. Political awareness is essential.
  • The ability to think and work at a global level. Strong coordination & diplomacy skills are essential. Professional experience in one or several key countries within the climate debate would be preferable, specifically China, USA, India, Brazil or South Africa.
  • Strong PR or media experience combined with good working knowledge of web 2.0 / social media and advertising development.
  • The ability to define & segment audiences across multiple countries – developing messages that are appropriate to political and corporate decision makers (especially the finance sector) as well as Greenpeace’s current & potential supporter base.
  • Management of a virtual team.
  • Articulate, creative, passionate, with excellent written and spoken English
