Description:

Purpose:

The Transformation Office invites suitably qualified and experienced applicants to apply for the Diversity Manager vacancy. The main purpose of this job is to:

  • Manage and coordinate the University’s strategy and obligations in relation to matters of diversity.
  • Manage, coordinate and train students and staff on the objectives and obligations that they have toward the University’s Social Justice Policies and Procedures
  • Manage discrimination complaints and ensure that these are timeously attended to and that staff and students impacted by discrimination are aware of their rights and responsibilities with regard to the resolution of discrimination complaints.
  • Oversee appropriate dispute resolution measures throughout the University

Key responsibilities include the following:

  • Manage and coordinate the University’s strategy and obligations in relation to matters of diversity and anti-discrimination;
  • Manage discrimination complaints including providing and facilitating staff/student advice, assistance and support; the establishment of a database of cases; receiving and investigating and responding to complaints from staff and students; managing the case flow; managing mediations, resolutions and outcomes in cases and liaising with the Employee Relations Department and the Office of Legal Services in the University;
  • Coordinate, design and facilitate human rights awareness campaigns;
  • Ensure that the Transformation Office Website is updated on social justice and human rights issues;
  • Represent the Transformation Office at various institutional levels;
  • Conduct research, review, monitor, evaluate and draft related policies and liaise with colleagues who do support work in social justice areas at the University;
  • Participate in the networks of service providers who deal with human rights and anti-discrimination;
  • Engage and manage strategic relations with academics who research in the area of social justice;
  • Work with the highest level of ethics and confidentiality;
  • Manage the diversity and discrimination budget.

Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree with courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level that deal with social justice issues or specifically with disability, race, class and gender inequalities.
  • At least 5 years’ experience dealing with conflict, mediation and resolution
  • Computer literacy in MS Office
  • Demonstrated project management skills, Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to influence at all levels within the university

Preferences:

A tertiary qualification in Human Rights Law is highly recommended.
