DATA SCIENTIST

Position: DATA SCIENTIST POSITION
Remuneration: A competitive salary package will be offered.
Description:

The MRC/Wits Developmental Pathways for Health Research Unit (DPHRU) is located within the Department of Paediatrics at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. A grant from the UK Medical Research Council has provided funding for a project entitled “Health and wellbeing of female adolescents and young adults and their infants: limiting the trans-generational risk of metabolic disease in South Africa”.

The successful candidate will be appointed to the University of the Witwatersrand and his/her place of work will be at the DPHRU offices at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto.

General Responsibilities:

  • extracting and cleaning the data
  • creating frontend platforms for data capturing and editing
  • managing website and data access (in the public domain)
  • creating and maintaining data archiving

Requirements:

  • Honours degree (masters an advantage) or equivalent in Information and Data Systems, or related fields
  • Previous work experience in a research environment will be an advantage
  • Experience working with relational databases is essential
  • Experience managing a team of data specialists is required
  • Competencies in the following data systems is important:
    • SQL database management
    • Access
    • Programming (Visual Basic)
    • Competency with statistical software eg. STATA

This is a 5 year contract position.
